I know this is largely a creative writing-baed forum, but I've been wondering what people plan to read for the summer. Here are mine:

1984- George Orwell (in progress...going a little slow)
Tess of the D'Urbervilles-Thomas Hardy (AP lit requirement)
The Glass Castle- Jeannette WAlls (other core mandatory choice)
EDIT:The Poisonwood Bible-Barbara Kingsolver(self-selected)

maybe some others if I have time!

Aside from the books I have to read, I plan on reading:

The Voice At 3:00 A.M. by Charles Simic (which I've already read quite a bit of)

World War Z by Max Brooks

Already Dead by Denis Johnson

Nobody Move by Denis Johnson

Gone Tomorrow by Lee Child

...and possibly some other poetry books by Simic and a couple of historical fiction pieces by Harry Turtledove/Dan Chernenko.

But then again, I have to read three books over the summer for my AP English 3 class: Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, Regarding the Pain of Others by Susan Sontag, and Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl.

The Killer Angels

Kite Runner

Othello

Secret Life of Bees

My Sister's Keeper

And about 25 more

Only problem I'm going to have with reading all of these, is that I also have several weeks worth of summer work for my AP US II class, a huge packet for my Spanish 4-Honors class, and I wanted to START working on a novel... As well as continuing with my poetry and songwriting... Oh, and I'll be working eight hours a day, five days a week at a day camp (thank God its not a sleepaway camp) for all but one week this summer... So my goals may be cut short...

Well, I have to read A Seperate Peace(forgot the author :P) And other books, but I chose Jurassic Park. To the OP, 1984 is a really good book, but it is way too descriptive on things, but near the climax, it is not boring. Keep that in mind when you read so you don't just throw it out ebcause you think it's boring.

I don't have anything that I exactly plan on reading. Just whatever looks good. Which is how I go about free reading anyways, all the time.

a spoonful of jam - michelle magorian - really good writer, the first in the series is excellent
armageddon - max hastings - brilliant world war 2 historian, done quite a few ww 2 books. ive read this book like a million times already, still excellent
resistance the gathering storm - cant remember the author, but looks great
finest hour - cant remember the author, but my own personal favourite book of all time. set from the perspective of several crucial people including churchill, roosevelt, and direct accounts from serviceman who were there, this book is just incredible. an account off incredible human spirit under the worse conditions, about how against all odds britain hung on against an enemy that outgunned her, out numbered and outmatched her. love it. buy it whenever you can.
all the harry potter books including tales of beedle the bard, quidditch through the ages, and fantastic beasts and where to fnd them. thats all i can think, proabbly more.
