What kind of equipment does a DJ usually need?

you will definately need a mixer, i recomend a Numark X1USB. you will need atleast two vinyl, CD, or tape decks, an amp (if thereisnt one in your mixer), and speakers. for Vinyl decks you will need to replace the cartridge and head atleast once a month for full quality sound. If you are using a program on a computer than you will only need the computer, the program, and speakers, however on most programs there is an option allowing you to plug in a seperate mixer or USB Deck.

Not any more. No more vinyl, cd or tape decks. Just a computer or even as simple as an MP3 player. :)

Donkey, good question, It is because I am the first DJ to mix Gabber and House / Dance together in one long mix (aprox 62 mins)
people said it couldnt be done, people said it was illogical, I just changed the spelling XD
Stealth, that's true but it is cheating and a harder way to do things in my opinion
thanks for correcting me though, it is true, but some places do not except "MP3 player DJs" and a few dont accept laptop or desktop DJs

Nothing beats vinyl for pure dj skills. Anyone can press buttons on a computer.

You have to have the right software. If you dont know what your doing, it does you no good.

Here is a screenshot from a leading mixing program Atomix Virtual DJ which I have used several times, and currently use for recording...
as you can see the SYNC buttons which allow you to syncronise the speed and beats is a huge button.... Thats the hard part of DJing over!

So you do use software! I though software was lame, and you used vinyl and cassetts.

I do, I use the software for recording off of my turntables and external Mixer, And I mixed on it a few time to see what it was like.

Hi, for one thing, stop double posting. Just use the edit button. It's against the rules to double post, I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up yet.
Anyways, is it hard to DJ?

My uncle has been a DJ for years and he uses Virtual DJ with a turntable hooked into the computer. I actually got to see him work last weekend it was amazing.

oh, sorry K.I.T.N I didnt realise, I didn't realy see the edit button untill now, it was easier to double post, I shall use the edit from now on though
-and it depends, it's relatively easy, as long as you have a good library of music that you know quite well, it depends, If you are intrested I would recommend starting with computer software because it saves you the troble of syncing, however, that is (atleas for me) the hardest bit of doing it on vinyl / tapes. I don't find it hard, but you know what they say "practise makes you better XD"
[EDIT]
... Like so
[edit]
Empty Misery; I'm glad you got to see it live, I know several DJs who I have seen live, and I do pretty much what your uncle does, except i onlylay on a free radio station, occasionally... I wish your uncle all the best =]
