It's because sex is usually something personal and not to be told around..just like when you masterbate, you don't tell people that you just did that a few mind ago during a conversation with your parents

Sex is usually something held to be a private, intimate relationship between two (or more if you're up for that) people. It's the social norms of the modern times. What is interesting though is how the perception of sex changes with age, such as how sex between two old people is more commonly frowned upon by the younger crowd whereas sex among the younger crowd is not so much frowned upon.
But either way, people value their privacy and something like sex is usually meant to be private. If it wasn't as private then it wouldn't be as it currently is. Why it is the way it currently is has a lot to due with culture, religion, moral and ethical beliefs, social norms, values you're taught as a child, etc... . Most of those were in a way handed down from generation to generation.

It's not that we are afraid of it.
It is just something private which should be treated as such out of respect for ourselves, our partners and others.

Times are changing if you ask me, people are taking a more open attitude to sex and its becoming less taboo over time. Its still a touchy subject with some though.

Video games tend to be more open as children will generally want/buy it, so it gets discussed far more with parent-child and also in public. Violence generally is more open to discussion but there is a certain limit, such as discussing methods of torture and their effectiveness, I'd think many people are not too open with that. So the violence bit, it depends on the severity.
However, the biggest difference with sex and movie/video-game violence is that the sex is real, if something happens, you cannot press a button to restart it.
But of course there's always variation with people.

Love is ever more dangerous than hate. I don't have a lot more to add that other people have not already slipped.

I don't think it's as much that we're afriad of it, but it's something that shouldn't be brought out to the open. Sex is something that is supposed to be a private intimate relation between two people that love eachother. I'm absolutely fine talking about it if it's put into a conversation, but there has to be a limit. Just like INFERNO said about violence. It's something open but it also has it's limits when being talked about.
We aren't really afraid of sex, we're just not that prone to talking about it whenever we want to.

Really? Can you explain what it was like before it was "distorted over the years"?

You have intrigued me and I'm eager to see your explanation. On the VT forums, it's not often that I'm intrigued by one sentence hopefully you give a very good response.

What really perplexes me is how many people think that they're hot shit because they've slept with (insert amount of partners) here.

Well, it used to be making love and a beautiful thing. Now it's about popularity and it's not making love anymore. It's fuckin and smacking asses. People have made sex derogatory and offensive. IMO :)

True, I think the porn industry has influenced this, porn has introduced new ways of sex, some rather odd and quite discusting in some people's views, now size plays an important part because of porn also.

That goes into biology and is a fundamental part of many social animals. Males are often ranked by status, and number of mates (more mates = better genes) is a factor in social status.

You're making it sound as though it's some sudden horrific change that has occurred and make it about popularity. Sex for popularity is nothing new and has been occurring for quite some time. It was made offensive years ago when it's used for rape (i.e. in armies, in the bible, etc...), so this isn't something that's startling and new. It was and currently is both, still a beautiful thing and an offensive thing. You can blame it on the porn industry all you want but the bottom line is, it was offensive before televisions even came around. Whether or not more people are making it more offensive and such I don't know, I've seen no evidence showing that it has.

Sex is something many see as personal people see that talking about it is like putting so much private information out in the open. Its is a result of centuries of the church sheltering peoples minds from their lives and not being able to experience life as what they deemed a sin or an abomination was soon set away from peoples mind as something natural and normal and into something embarrassing and private. Yet now people are beginning to open up about sex, TV is seen talking about all kinds of sex in TV-14 shows (HUGE example. Sex and the city).

It doesn't really go into biology like that.. it's just a social popularity contest. No human male actually instinctively thinks or feels when he gets laid, he's got better genes. I don't know where you got that from.
Although it is to do with social status, but it's really like other social norms. A guy that can beat everyone up = popular
A guy with most of the friends = popular
A guy with the newest PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox or football game out = popular
Anyway, I think sex is taboo because of aformentioned reasons. Although it's part of nature, it's also a very private and intimate thing in terms of human sociology. Also, the fact that it's taboo (or sometimes even illegal) to show female/male genitalia, which are.. part of sex, has something to do with it.
