I don't know if I believe this...
probably outlawing music that makes people do bad things but just because it is goth or wahtever...i hesitate to believe that

It's simply regulating the goth and emo websites and preventing someone from entering a building due to their clothing.

Igor Ponkin's quote from the source given was: "Of course there are emo teens who just listen to their music. But our actions are not directed at them but rather at those who also hurt themselves, commit suicide and promote those acts". It seems they wish to reduce, hopefully eliminate suicide and self-harming and these music genres are seen as a source for it and both the music and clothing supposedly promote it.

Although I find this to be more of a joke, I cant imagine something this silly to be passed as law in modern times.

Good to see Russia is still a country of ballsy politicians!

Even while Vladamir Putin is gone they still make very wise decisions.

Now we can only hope Australia bans emos to!

Russia makes a wise change for once?

Lol. Look at the date of the article. 27th July 2008.

Since I can't find anything that actually says that the bill was actually passed I think it's safe to say that it isn't illegal to listen to emo/goth music etc in Russia.

Shame.Idiot.
It's more of a shame that we can't pass a law making it illegal for people to support laws which discriminate people...

I don't see how a capsizing a subculture is going to eliminate self-harm. The issues are still present; the only difference is that they're not on the surface now. Russia is a silly country, but hey... lets see how it works out.

Not that I'm trying to defend the emos or anything here, but that is so ridiculous. For those emos who do self-harm, not that all of them do, they listen to emo music because they self-harm, because they relate with the songs. They don't self-harm because the music tells them to.

How are they going to classify what is "emo" and what's not, anyway? Are they just going to outlaw any bands whose members have fringe bangs and black fingernails? How are they going to decide if an outfit is too emo for the wearer to enter a building? I just don't think it's going to work out for them. Nice try though, Russia. Not.

I think they had good intentions, which was to decrease suicide, self-harm, etc.... . But the way the went about doing it, well, was pretty much a complete fail. Also, suppose that by some miracle they did pass that bill and suicide, self-harm, etc... is still occurring, then what? Ban rock or metal or maybe go left-field and give country and folk music a shot.

Pass a law banning freedom of speech? Maybe you two will be happy with that in Canada and the U.K., but I wouldn't be in the United States. I don't know how anyone could be happy knowing that their right to have an opinion is suppressed.

How would outlawing discrimination and prejudice be an act towards the banning of freedom of speech?

And the USA, Canada and the UK all have laws against discrimination anyway.

Laws, yes. Laws that I disagree with, but that's irrelevant anyway. You said banning it.

And if you can't comprehend how banning speech that isn't all encompassing is limiting free speech, then me explaining it is not going to help any.

How can you be against laws that rule against discrimination?
Would you actually like to be harassed/beaten/killed just for being of a particular age, ethnicity, sex, job or fan base?

I didn't make the statement "It's more of a shame that we can't pass a law making it illegal for people to support laws which discriminate people..." to express my support for limited freedom of speech. I was expressing my dismay and despair at the existence of people who support discrimination.

But, if you want to take it differently to what I intended then so be it...

See, now you're blending discriminatory actions with speech. They are not one in the same.

Discrimination covers attitudes, speech and actions.
So although they are different forms of discrimination, they are all still discrimination.

I don't think this discussion even has a straightforward course anymore. I think we're on two different wavelengths.

I didn't ignore anything. The context of your second post was random and off charted. It seemed to imply that we shouldn't have the right to free speech when it pertains to things such as race, gender, ethnicity, religion, et cetera.
