SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea's communist regime has warned of a nuclear war on the Korean peninsula while vowing to step up its atomic bomb-making program in defiance of new U.N. sanctions.

The North's defiance presents a growing diplomatic headache for President Barack Obama as he prepares for talks Tuesday with his South Korean counterpart on the North's missile and nuclear programs.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak told security-related ministers during an unscheduled meeting Sunday to "resolutely and squarely" cope with the North's latest threat, his office said. Lee is to leave for the U.S. on Monday morning.

A commentary Sunday in the North's main state-run Rodong Sinmun newspaper, carried by the official Korean Central News Agency, claimed the U.S. has 1,000 nuclear weapons in South Korea. Another commentary published Saturday in the state-run Tongil Sinbo weekly claimed the U.S. has been deploying a vast amount of nuclear weapons in South Korea and Japan.

North Korea "is completely within the range of U.S. nuclear attack and the Korean peninsula is becoming an area where the chances of a nuclear war are the highest in the world," the Tongil Sinbo commentary said.

Kim Yong-kyu, a spokesman at the U.S. military command in Seoul, called the latest accusation "baseless," saying Washington has no nuclear bombs in South Korea. U.S. tactical nuclear weapons were removed from South Korea in 1991 as part of arms reductions following the Cold War.

South Korea's Unification Ministry issued a statement Sunday demanding the North stop stoking tension, abandon its nuclear weapons and return to dialogue with the South.

On Saturday, North Korea's Foreign Ministry threatened war on any country that dared to stop its ships on the high seas under the new sanctions approved by the U.N. Security Council on Friday as punishment for the North's latest nuclear test.

It is not clear if the statements are simply rhetorical. Still, they are a huge setback for international attempts to rein in North Korea's nuclear ambitions following its second nuclear test on May 25. It first tested a nuclear device in 2006.

In Saturday's statement, North Korea said it has been enriching uranium to provide fuel for its light-water reactor. It was the first public acknowledgment the North is running a uranium enrichment program in addition to its known plutonium-based program. The two radioactive materials are key ingredients in making atomic bombs.

On Sunday, Yonhap news agency reported South Korea and the U.S. have mobilized spy satellites, reconnaissance aircraft and human intelligence networks to obtain evidence that the North has been running a uranium enrichment program.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said it could not confirm the report. The National Intelligence Service — South Korea's main spy agency — was not available for comment.

North Korea said more than one-third of 8,000 spent fuel rods in its possession has been reprocessed and all the plutonium extracted would be used to make atomic bombs. The country could harvest 13-18 pounds (6-8 kilograms) of plutonium — enough to make at least one nuclear bomb — if all the rods are reprocessed.

In addition, North Korea is believed to have enough plutonium for at least half a dozen atomic bombs.

North Korea says its nuclear program is a deterrent against the U.S., which it routinely accuses of plotting to topple its regime. Washington, which has 28,500 troops in South Korea, has repeatedly said it has no such intention.

The new U.N. sanctions are aimed at depriving the North of the financing used to build its rogue nuclear program. The resolution also authorized searches of North Korean ships suspected of transporting illicit ballistic missile and nuclear materials.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the new U.N. penalties provide the necessary tools to help check North Korea's continued pursuit of nuclear weapons.

The sanctions show that "North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons and the capacity to deliver those weapons through missiles is not going to be accepted by the neighbors as well as the greater international community," Clinton said Saturday at a news conference in Canada.

i agree that north korea is just trying to get attention from the world, to show its majority of poor citizens that their government has power.

it could also be due to simply Kim Jong-il going out with a bang

i've also noticed that south korea are not overly fussed and not as worried as they really should be, Japanease citizens are petrified and the majority of the country now despise the communist state

and for your title "north korea warns of nuclear war" at the minute the country has not yet mastered the technology to create a nuclear warhead small enough to fit on a missile

You can't ignore N. Korea they are a rouge nation who I think will use nukes it given the chance. Any country with Nukes is a threat to World Peace.

I do agree they are going to use the idea of them having nukes to deture the US from attacking them, having nukes gets them noticed.

I agree with having UN sanctions but they are coutries like France and Russia who will find ways around the sanctions to help N. Korea out because it offers tehm a market to sell their technonlogy.

ONe thing to remember about sanctions too is that it is the people who suffer not the people running the government. The N. Korean people are are already a poor people why make it worse on them.

What we need to do is get the to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Then the UN and members of this treaty can work withe them to keep them from using the nuclear weapons.

The UN's plan should work. Without imports/exports, it's hard to keep a country stable, let alone with the ability to create weapons of mass destruction.

You know, the USA and Russia have stockpiles of hundreds or thousands of un-used nuclear arms? UK and France have nukes too, but on a much smaller scale. Are we not a "threat to world peace", also? I think this makes us look like a bunch of hypocrites.

I don't see why people here in the West are panicking a bitch about it, we haven't had any hints of actually being threatened or attacked by North Korea, and I seriously think they don't even have the power to attack us.

Skubba, I put North Korea warns of Nuclear War because that was the title of the article, sheesh.
EDIT: And also, North Korea's communist regime has warned of a nuclear war on the Korean peninsula while vowing to step up its atomic bomb-making program in defiance of new U.N. sanctions. Obvioulsy, you didn't read the first sentence.

Wow.
First off, N.K. has balls.
Second, umm...wow.
Third, I think we should just block all trade with them. See how long they can remain self-suffiencent.
Fourth, I really hope we have some intercept missles over there...and hopefully a secret stash of atomic bombs over there too. If not, then we can say that our gov't is a failure.
Fifth, are we REALLY trying to topple their regime. I mean, I know the CIA does all types of stupid stuff but if we really were doing something, wouldn't we have gone to war already...
I think we should just blow them off the face of the Earth now and avoid the headache.

even though it's north korea and i agree, this could turn many people and other nations on their side through general sympathy

I agree 100% with you here

Second, umm...wow.

The trade embargo will work for a while as long as all the countries in the UN follow it. France traded with Iraq when the UN had trade embargoes set up and I am sure China will trade with them too.

Fourth, I really hope we have some intercept missiles over there...and hopefully a secret stash of atomic bombs over there too. If not, then we can say that our govt is a failure.

Our missile defense system does not work that good. The only Nukes we have over there are on Aircraft Carriers. Japan won't allow us to have any Nukes on their countries soil. We may have some on Guam if we still have any bombers there. Besides we have enough missiles still on our sub fleet to take out N. Korea. The point here is why do we want to start a nuclear war where it has no winners and everyone loses.

Fifth, are we REALLY trying to topple their regime. I mean, I know the CIA does all types of stupid stuff but if we really were doing something, wouldn't we have gone to war already...

Since the Mid 90's the CIA has been gutted thanks to President Clinton. The geography of Korea makes it hard to invade because of the mountains and valleys. Nobody wins in a Nuclear War and the fall out will reach the US and its Allies in the Pacific Region

I was not trying to contradict anything you said here I was just trying to give out more information. I hope this helps, but John does bring up some good valid points here.

The Best way to handle this is with getting them to sign Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) like I posted earlier. Trade embargoes will work as long as all of the countries will follow it. But Russia, China and France will fail us like they did in Iraq. They need the exports to N. Korea.

I actually think China will do what it can to help stop this.
Even though they are allies, China does not want a nuclear war, or any war for that matter.

China will be in a shithole if our allies stop trading with them.
So they shouldn't piss us off either. lol

Thanks Rob for that.

I haven't really read all of the posts above, but you know that reporter(s) who got caught in North Korea? Yea, I believe that North Korea is going to use them as a bargaining chip to try to get the UN/US to allow them to perform/deal with nuclear activity. But then again, that is just what I think.

I dont really think they would launch an attack on the US though because if they did, basically the whole world would be after them and most likely bomb them all. yea.

i think the US is scared that NK might become powerful enough to threaten their influence their. If it had been Russia or China or even India the Us would have backed of and taken a hint.
