View Full Version : VT is a Social Networking Site for Horny Teenagers

... Sometimes.
Looking around at new members profiles. All the topless profile pics, albums with people commenting on their attractiveness and other sexual comments.
Seriously, what the fuck? This is a help site, not a dating site. Some of these I'm talking about are the ones who fill out all the p101 surveys, to be blunt.
It does have to stop, and I understand that may be hard. I suggest finding as many people as possible, taking the pictures & comments off and pming them explaining this.
Now if the person who has posted these images is a good user, & helps people I don't see a problem. It's when people sign up just for this reason, to get comments on them and talk to others with chats.
When I had my MSN up here, I'd always get guys adding me asking for my penis size and sexuality. I had to remove it from my profile for that reason and block all of them.
I've noticed a lot more of this recently.

Yeah so have I. Lots of members have. I honestly don't know how you could enforce it though, we could give it a go. But it depends on what Ant is prepared to do, and how to deal with it.
Has anyone got any ideas? I have none.

Well I did say ideas.
I don't think that would go through. We would lose many members that way. I doubt that staff would go for it. I don't know actually.
See what others say. I would lose my job to start with. :P

There's no possible way we can filter between good users and picture comment whores. If you guys want these features you have to live with the fact that there are these types of users joining.
If you guys want to stop it we can go back to the days where VT was a lot more simpler like when we were on 3.6 and have limited profiles and less social networking.
But when you are gonna have these social features people are going to use them for different reasons.
When I had my MSN up here, I'd always get guys adding me asking for my penis size and sexuality. I had to remove it from my profile for that reason and block all of them.
Jon that's nothing new. It was a problem now and a problem 3-4 years ago.

Jon, this is a teenage website and teens are notoriously horny. There is no getting around that.
I agree with your statement about how we are a site that aim to help people and that these fancy social networking things aren't necessary.
But they are nice to have and to use and it helps the members who use them to bond a bit more.
I also think that it isn't necessary for members to use these features or even look at them if they don't want to. No one is forcing you to look at member's photos or photo comments.

No, I'm pretty sure that the PM system has always been about.

No one is forcing you to look at member's photos or photo comments.
Well I agree with that on the whole, although when its someones avatar its hard to avoid.
For me the key question would be whether this is in anyway interfering with those people who dont want to look at the puberty threads or dont want to look at profile albumns. Provided those people that want to get help on other issues are still able to do so cant these things co-exist?

I dont agree.... i like VT the way it is.
Yes those stupid adds asking for inappropriate questions are annoying, but if I can handle it as I receive at least 10 of them a week, I'm pretty sure everyone can.
I don't like that the site keeps taking away features for the sake of commodity.
one way or another something else will happen, it's all about the information you post.
I have MSN, Skype, and AIM. As you see, only AIM is in my profile. That limits all the adds to one IM system.
PMs can be ignored, and reported.
And those searching for pic comments.... well just deal with it.
It's not that big of a deal.
and if P101 is removed. that will decrease the size of this forum considerably.
and in all honestly it's P101 that brought many of the users,
so i say just limit your personal info, and let the rest be.

The way I see it, if you don't like something, and it bothers you so much it downgrades the site.
You know where the door is. Leave.
It's impossible to change the site to everyone's likings.
Donkey
June 14th, 2009, 11:54 AM
Okay the main idea isn't about removing the features.
It's about these people.
I posted this for you to post your ideas too, but you seem to disagree. Why don't you come up with something?
I've talked to several people about it, and everyone agrees that this should change.
Heather, I will not be leaving thanks. It doesn't bother me so much, it's just a suggestion. We don't have to downgrade, the features can just be turned off.

There is a report button on almost every function of the site. If something is inappropriate... Report it.
Otherwise, I don't really see a problem with pictures/comments. People regularly report bad (not including shirtless... You see shirtless people/pics daily. Not a big deal.) pictures and comments, and they are taken down.
I mean, I've never been a fan, but apparently other members have been, or they would never have been on here, or still here.
As for MSN stuff, I'm not sure if you saw, but Laura and the seniors recently released some information about what to do about that (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showthread.php?t=46283).

As long as it's not breaking any rules I can't see it being a problem. Over the years I've had dozens of people add me on msn for reasons I don't like, it's not hard to block them though. And so what if people want to post pictures of themselves with a little less clothing than usual? As long as there are no nudes then no rules are being broken. No one is forcing you to look at them either. We can't change everything just to please one person, if you don't like it then feel free to click here (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/login.php?do=logout&logouthash=1245004412-b6e846f0543abaa8baefd396e4e84df771b9e3f4). Also VT isn't a dating site, our main proirity always has been and still is to help people, so some of us want to have a little fun on top of that? It's no big deal, you have to live with it, it's what some of us call life.

You can tell who the members are who join this site for the purpose of dating or if I will be so bluntly to state it sexual gratification.
Jon do what I did and take away all of your contact information off of your profile. I agree with Paula I can handle the people who request to trade picture or even ask you to cam with them. I never report them because if you tell them to leave you alone they will.
I do agree that there should be restrictions put on newer members or at least the members who have less than 100 posts. If you have noticed there are members who have been on VT for years and have never posted. I think these members should be removed because we all know the reason there are here.
Well this is just my thoughts on this subject.

The polls and pictures are not hurting any one. The way to get rid of these people is to report them to a gmod or admin, when they approach you for camming or trading pictures. The mods are powerless when it comes to banning some one and can only freeze until some one with the authority to ban can ban this person.

Thankfully VT doesn't work like that
If you don't like it don't look at it
If you don't like the avatar add them to your ignore list
These features are a great improvement from the phpBB days I'm proud of how far the site has come; program wise. It has been a major determining factor in VT's growth.
DO NOT GET RID OF P101
It was created as containment
the last thing we need is for that dam to be removed
erugh
So to put it in a simple a term as possible
If you don't like the way VT's run
Nobody's forcing you to be here

1. I agree that the comments on some people's photos seem a little like pick-up lines.
2. I agree that puberty questions in blogs are really annoying.
3. I agree that some of the blogs are really innappropriate. Like seriously, one is called the bulge report, where this guy talks about all the bulges he's seen in the last like month and all the peeks of guys boners he tries to get. And yes, that is on this site.
4. I agree that people who add you to ask you "puberty" questions are really annoying and gross.
5. I agree that you wish less people like that would join.
But it's not going to happen. Except maybe stopping number 3. That's just gross.
I think that nobody should have their MSN or AIM or anything open on this site, and if somebody wants it, they should PM you. So that's what I've done.
It may seem bad, but these people are not breaking any rules. It seems slutty but that's the worst part of the forum, and also the part that got the most people joining too.
P101 is two faced because it brings in members (sometimes our best members), but it's gross. We just have to live with that.
As far as getting rid of the social stuff, I personally think albums are a waste, but that's just my opinion because I don't use them. I also think we should have blog moderators but I don't know if that's part of the system. The other stuff, you can prevent yourself. DON'T leave your MSN up here, that's just asking for it :P

We all get what you're saying but we don't all necessarily agree with it. Yes, it can get very annoying. Yes, a large part of this behaviour is unecessary and uncalled for. But this isn't a huge enough problem that can only be solved by depriving everyone of features like blogs, photo albums etc.
If VT changed to suit every whim then it wouldn't be the place it is today.
I have had many a vent/rant about aspects of this site that I feel are deviant from what we are supposed to be about etc. You will have seen one or two.
But VT won't change for one person and I'm glad. It shows that our management team are strong, know where they want this site to go and what they want this site to include. These are all good qualities for leadership and I respect them a hell of a lot for that.

Yes, Jon, we do get it.
I have been angered by, frustrated by and triggered (to want to self harm) by the vast mass of puberty/sex related posts on here. Trust me, I would be a hell of a lot happier without all of that but I have had to learn to deal with it. I too (when I was younger) have had to remove my email and MSN from my profile because of guys from VT wanting all sorts of shit and I have only just put them back up there.
What you have to realise is that, beyond taking down your email/MSN from your profile and personally monitoring what you do and don't look at while on here there, isn't a way of stopping it without turning this place into a complete dictatorship and none of us want that.
If you see something you feel is breaking the rules then report it.
If it doesn't break rules and you see it but don't like it then you will have to deal with it the same way the rest of us do.
Also, I haven't criticised you so don't know where you got that from. But if you want to percieve it that way then by all means carry on...

I'm in a strange position here. I post mainly in the p101 threads, they have most relevance to me. I also enjoy some of the topless photos, sorry, i'm bi, you all know that, so what do you expect. I don't see that they do a lot of harm, although I agree it makes you wonder quite what the person is trying to achieve when that's their avatar.
But then again, those of you who know me well think I'm too cautious about giving out my msn details etc. Well you cant have it all ways. I'm very very cautious in that respect, and despite posting fairly open and frank experiences dont get junk mail through as a result.

A lot of forums, there are restrictions of privledges based on time there, post count, etc.
I believe if we could put a restriction like, can't post a blog til 50 posts, can't start a thread till 5 posts, can't enter chat till a week on VT. STuff like that.

While that sounds like a good idea it isn't difficult to get 5 or 15 posts. That can very easily be done in the puberty sections alone in an hour or three.
It hardly prevents the issue from occurring.

No I immediately disagree with the "can't post a thread till 5 posts" idea.
1. That encourages people to post in other's threads with their questions (thread hijacking, and this comes up frequently...we don't want it to happen more).
2. The purpose of this site is to post in order to get help for their problems. If you can't create a thread until a specific amount of time, that's like diminishing the purpose.
3. How are we going to get people to realize that they need to post 5 times before they post a thread? Nobody reads things, if you haven't noticed.

Even if we did "get rid of p101" we would basically lose the whole site. I would say 60 percent of all members come from P101. A lot of our greatest members found this site from P101...so thats really out of the question.

You all honestly are acting like a bunch of 2 year olds. I'm agreeing with Will here that we all need to respect others opinions and not misunderstand each other.
Now, on to the question: I'm going to agree with what Andy said. It's life and you need to deal with it. True, VT is meant to be an advice site, but that doesn't mean it's members can't fun right? If people want to post pics of themselves, then I say let them. If they want to do it topless (I've seen mostly guys do this), then let them. As long as there is no graphic nudity then they aren't breaking rules. I can also agree with you on some of the picture comments. They do seem like pick up lines and it makes VT look like a dating site (which it isn't).
Look, no one is forcing you or telling you to look at the pictures. If you don't like it, then just turn the other cheek and forget about it. If you don't like some of the social features, then that's your own problem. We can't just turn them all off and go back to the ancient era of VT and not have any social interaction (except with the PM system). If the administration were to just crush down to the whim of one person to turn off all social features, then I would lose all faith in this site.
As I said, and as many others have said, if you don't like it, you don't like it, because shit happens.

Only solution i can find is that those ppl who have such pics in their avatars should control themselves, but there is nothing here what moderators could change, deal with it, this is on members level and it can only be changed by those members who do such things, but that's just my opinion.
Again, i think that NOTHING on this site should be changed or removed....

I think shirtless pics shouldn't be allowed.
People don't post shirtless pics unless they have a special agenda or intent and we all know what that is.
That agenda isn't allowed on our site, so I think the administration should ban all shirtless pics, both on their profile and as avatars.
I mean come on, people don't post those casually.

I don't think they should be allowed, however I strongly disagree with people posting pictures of drug usage or drinking. People come up with the "it's not illegal for everyone" line...while that may be true, it's bullshit. The rules state that promoting drug use is strictly prohibited...pictures promote it!
Anyway...I don't think either of those things should really be allowed, but my opinion isn't worth too much shit so it doesn't matter.

I agree with the drug/drinking thing too. We are teens. Its illegal for...90 percent of the people here, so why as a site, should we condone those activities.
I think the shirtless pics promote sex and cybering and bad convos just like drinking pics promote underage drinking.
Both should be banned! :banned:

There is a report button on almost every function of the site. If something is inappropriate...
Unfortunatly, the people running/moding the forums don't agree with what is inappropriate. Threads on penis size and masterbation are stickied. I supposed this was in an attempt to cut down on the number of new penis size and masturbation threads, but still...
Also, is it really a question of horny teens? Let's be honest here, someone who signs up, posts nothing - not a pic of themselves, not and avatar, not one thread, nothing - and starts PMing 13 and 14 y/o guys asking about penis size... I'd say there's really good chance they're not who they say they are. .... and the net usage stats I'm pulling from Alexa and Comcast seem to support my supposition.

Those teens are not always here just for sex. Usually they just want to read more threads, create a help thread and then get their answers and leave. If they do PM asking for penis size this is generally curiousity because lets face it, being a male going through puberty is kinda...scary because its not something you particularly talk about. I am not saying however that there aren't bad people here for bad reasons. The staff really does try to ban them as they see it.

While I totally agree that what other site people go to is completely out of your control, and no one elses business, I don't think that there's nothing you can do to change how people get here.
People who arive at this site because they searched for "teen penises" and "boys with erections" are here because phrases like that exist on the site. They're here because they can get teen boys to talk about things they shouldn't be with someone they don't know.
As I understand it, this site was founded to help teens with the kind of problems they don't feel comfortable talking to adults about, and that's admirable - even when those problems are just about the normal crap kids go through during the hell known as puberty - but threads about penis size, how often and where you masterbate, how much pubic hair you have, who has fetishes and of what kind, ejaculate distances, and enumerable "how to" treads... all these things attract the wrong kind of attention to your site.
You can argue that many of the threads are legitimate, in as much as they really are just teens and not people posing as teens (which is debatable itself), but really... well, so what?
Just be honest with yourselfs. Does the value of these kinds of threads outway the negative attention you most certainly -do- get from people who ought not to be here. If the founders of this site think it does, I'll shut up about it. If not, let's start reporting all of it to get it off the site.

Unfortunately there are no "founders" left, only good administrators.
Does the value of these kinds of threads outway the negative attention you most certainly -do- get from people who ought not to be here.
From my understanding, the site is going to die without such a heavy load of people coming for the puberty section of our site. We get some of our best members from the puberty section of our site.
I came here for puberty. now I despise it. Many other people, including moderators, come here for puberty, and now take little or no part in it.
I think this outweighs itself.
Threads on penis size and masterbation are stickied. I supposed this was in an attempt to cut down on the number of new penis size and masturbation threads, but still...
'But still' what? It was a good idea then and it's a good idea now. Now we have a place so that the new thread's/posts don't spill onto other pages so that people with better questions can get answers without having their thread be pushed away by too much traffic. Now if anybody else has questions about penis size/masturbation, they can just go to those threads.
If pedophiles get off asking for boy's 'sizes' in those threads, I guess we can't really help that...as long as they don't do anything else.
I feel the only thing the staff can do is emphasize the members to report anything that seems weird - i.e. people asking for your messenger and then they do something innappropriate, weird threads, people asking for personal information, etc.
That way we can cut down on this stuff. I don't think reporting stuff in PMs or in threads is emphasized enough, even though we talk about it all the time up here.
Maybe one more thing we can do is have moderators lock topics that have asked the same question as a thread that has been done before - I know that they do for some things, but we have like 5 topics that are full of surveys that basically ask the same thing...

Andy,
why would you have found that album if you weren't looking around. You cant stumble across someones album by mistake, they're hidden away by their very nature.
Its dangerous to think you can second guess someone's motives in posting an album. I dont think it would be fair to comment on individuals, but in the example you quoted I suspect things are more complex than you imagine.
Some people really need the reassurance of someone telling them they look good. That doesnt necessarily mean that either the person that posts the photo or the person that leaves a comment are "on the pull".

It is very easy to look at picture albums without going through everyone's profile. You click "Community" at the top of your screen and go down to "Pictures & Albums." I've never done any digging for the pictures I've found that should be removed (which has been plenty).

I don't mind casual shirtlessness like at a beach or party or something, but when they are just getting done with a shower or getting ready for one, they only have boxers on and they are down showing half their pubic region (not pubic hair, but the region). There is a difference between a picture that is deliberately taken shirtless to show off and just a casual picture.

On the beach you're supposed to get shirtless. I mean duh. Everybody is supposed to get shirtless so nobody cares. But on a website, especially with teenagers, there should be a level of vanity and especially with a puberty forum, it seems like displaying your body - especially before a shower in your boxers - is sending a message of sex appeal and seduction.

Ok seriously, look back on my last posts to see my point. I believe that I said my point is these photos are not really "casual" and "harmless". The only reason that these pictures need to be disallowed, is because it end a wrong message about the site. We don't want the look of being a softcore porno site like Jared said. Plus, if pedophiles joined (which has happened in the past), it would be like a personal HEAVEN. We want the members of this site to be safe and feel safe on the forum. We can't have members just posing in their underwear taking pictures before and after they take a shower.
If the users on here that are posting these kind of pictures are truly concerned about their looks that they go down to the INTERNET to get comments on their attractiveness, then they really need to stop. It sends a wrong message about the site, because this is a helpping site and not a social network. Granted, most of us have stayed on here for years and months and have made good friends, those new social features help us bond more. But if newer users are going to be posing for photos like this and post them in an album, then why have them? We can't set a limit to posting pictures. If we say "You must have x ammount of posts to make a photo album" then that will just encourage spamming, which will just cause more trouble for the mods.

Notice how it said "side note" and was a very brief blurb. If you wanted to address it further, you should have taken it to PM, but alright.
First of all, immaturity consists of little maggots like yourself existing in a microcosm of fairy tale and cupcakes, thinking that egotism is the enemy of all and that any opinion that conflicts with yours is a byproduct of the person being "snobby". And it's amusing that you want to talk about rudeness, when this was what you left behind:
"He already demonstrated his point. Get over yourself and stop acting so snobby."
When your balls drop and your idea of maturity evolves from "LOL NOT FINDN SECKS JOKEZ FUNNI", then you can tell me to behave like an adult. Until then, stop pissing on your balls and learn that other people are going to have opinions that conflict with yours and them defending their views isn't a result of them being arrogant.

Excuse me this 14 year old girl is probably more mature than you will ever be
And I'm not bitter its just that all this complaining about P101 is starting to get on my nerves
Its a forum you don't like it don't go on it the end
The same with the pictures

Perhaps when your idea of maturity has not yet evolved beyond a basic level. But since you seem so keen on believing this, how about you demonstrate how this is the case? I'm all ears, baby.

That's rather hypocritical of you. You're belly aching because of a debate going on, yet your point is "if you don't like it, don't look at it." If you don't like the debate, don't open the thread.

It appears in the New Posts and Today's Posts searches so it isn't as simple as that.
One can only read titles like "Masturbating with friends" and "Had sex with my brother" so many times without getting annoyed.
If there were an option to exclude it from ALL searches then that would be ideal as it would make the situation better for everyone.

To be fair. most of the "Masturbating with friends" questions are probably genuine concerns from young guys confused about their sexuality. Yes it crops up so often that it is boring because its repetitive but its not repetitive for the person that is confused and worried by what they're feeling.
My own suspicion is that many of the "I had sex with my brother" type of threads are just complete fiction, and those are very annoying. But how on earth do you prevent that?

Ripplemagne, Chris......whoever you are, you need to stop. You're starting to make this thread go from a debate to an argument. If you have nothing better to do than insult people, then you need to ask yourself why you are on these forums in the first place. Calling people hypocrites for their own opinions is not the reason to debate. Sure, I may be double-sided, but that is my opinions on this entire subject. IF you don't like it, then tough shit. I'm leaving this thread only because you have pushed me out of it. I'm tired of dealing with you. I have yet to see you give anything POSITIVE in this conversation, which is not making me thoroughly convinced to continue posting in this.
If my opinions truly make me a hypocrite, then I don't care. If I'm double-sided on a subject, then I don't care about that either. It's my opinion, and you need to learn how to respectt that. I'm out of this piece of shit thread.

The problem, here, isn't that I don't respect your opinion. The problem is quite the antithesis. I state my opinion and, somehow, I'm the home wrecker, the villain, the evil doer and the shadow caster.
This entire thread, I've given feedback and contribution to the topic at hand, but you only seem to notice my responses to people who can't handle my opinion. Some of you are so sensitive that if your opinion is challenged, you think it's an attack on your worth and paint me as your antagonist.
As for insults, why don't you look back and see who made the first insult?

I for one do not begin to understand why these vicious insults are allowed to continue. It seems completely against the vt spirit. Of course we dont all have to agree, discussion would be more boring if that was always the case, but its a shame if a contributer feels unable to continue in a debate as a result of this kind of abuse.

As a former mod, and someone who feels like he has pretty good judgment, I have to agree with Chris. He is on the minority side of the opinion which is a place I am very familiar with. When you are on the minority of the opinion, people often attack you (which is the case here) and you have to stand up for yourself, sometimes a bit more harshly than others. He is standing up for himself, which is what everyone should do. Everyone needs to quit being so damn sensitive about every little thing.

I agree with this. When I joined, I posted one of those, and I fit the definition of a young guy not sure about my sexuality.

"He already demonstrated his point. Get over yourself and stop acting so snobby."
Again, you address Rep, which is private, in a public way, and bring it out into the open, in the middle of a different discussion in the admin's forum.
And I have the right to think he's a coward for it.
You can THINK whatever you want, but when you SAY something to somebody else, you might hurt their feelings or cause trouble.

I was just arguing my opinion and then he gets arrogant and snobby. And he keeps the insults coming and coming.
Maybe you guys should report a problem if it's actually bugging you. Now the entire thread is off course because of me and whoever that other guy is.

Ergo, the words:
SIDE NOTE.
You can THINK whatever you want, but when you SAY something to somebody else, you might hurt their feelings or cause trouble.
It's so wrong of me to call him a coward, but when you call me a snob, it's completely alright? What kind of double standard is that? If you don't want someone to hurt your feelings, don't cast the first stone. Your mentality is a mess.

I stayed on topic, while you continued to respond to me, but now, it's completely derailed. But where did you find arrogance or snobbiness? In me presenting my opinion? I didn't know anything that conflicts with your view of the world was, suddenly, arrogant.
This is the post you derepped:
And the beach was an comparative demonstration on why it's not a big deal. Quit stone walling and actually address the point if you still have one.
Which was no more abrasive than this:
DUDE. This is not an argument about THE BEACH. It is still sexual to do that HERE.
You've been defeated. Just bow out gracefully and stop making this worse for yourself. I'm not mad at you, I don't hate you, I don't dislike you and I'm not going to berate you for bowing out with grace.
