The room is full of lights
which with deep sadness I switch off one by one.
My lights have names.

Two lights burn strongly,
with steady and true beam,
their names begin with J and D.

One light sparkles brighly
attracting many
like moths who fly around
thinking for one moment that they might sparkle too.
Its name begins with C.

Here is a calmer light,
a light of radiant beauty,
this light understands the darkness too.
Its name begins with R.

One light shines as a beacon,
illuminated with beauty from within,
this light draws me in.
Yet I misread its beam and am dashed upon the reef.
Light of beauty, your name begins with L.

And here, my final light.
This light is younger,
light of charm, light of promise.
Light of love, uneven light
too bright on one side of the room.
How can I bear to reach the switch
that's labelled with an M?

Lights all extinguished.
Black silence.
One look back into the darkness,
close the door and slink away.
