I've recently had a problem. Before I made this thread, I was going to check my hotmail on msn and every time I enter in www.msn.com (http://www.msn.com) in the address bar in my browser (IE6) I keep getting a search from ask.com and I can't access the msn homepage.
What is going on?

Run a virus scan (http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm).
(And I'm fairly sure I already know the answer to this but... ) Do you have the latest updates installed from Micosoft Update?

I can now access the site. I don't think it was a virus, and all I had to do was reboot my computer. Don't know how that happened, but if it happens next time, I'll run a scan. I don't install any updates from Microsoft. Never have. Is this a problem?

It can be, yes.
Microsoft doesn't release updates just for shits & giggles.
They release them to patch security holes/performance holes in the operating system.
The more you update your system, the better protected it will be.
IE6 is also just asking for a virus.
I STRONGLY reccomend that you install SP3 (You may have to install SP2 first), along with the newest updates, including IE8.

Personally I can't stand IE8 (or IE7 for that matter); but dude's totally right about the patch updates. You need them if you wanna keep your computer secure (relatively speaking, anyway).
Also, I'd personally recommend switching to Mozilla Firefox. It's more stable, more secure, and has a tonne of add-ons available; some of which are -really- usefull.

Oh, and speaking of a ton of add-ons:

If you carefully read that whole page, you'll note that it doesn't dispute Firefox is more stable and more secure than IE; it just says it's not completely stable and secure, and that Opera is better.
Anyway, I'm not an open source fanboy, or a Microsoft hater; just an IE7+8 hater (I still use IE 6 sometimes).
Having said all that; I'd still recommend switching browsers. There's lots to choose from. Many better than IE.
