My definition of rap: Someone who thinks they're cool for being able to talk to a beat about how they have to hire whores because they can't get a girlfriend.

I hated rap until I discovered Chronic Future: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cc8t-NfNuk (You have to listen to the whole song ;))
And if you don't like that song, I guarantee you you'll PROBABLY like one of their songs... Almost all of their songs are different genres. If you like hard rock, you'll find a song you like, soft rock, just plain "rock", pop, electronica, rap, etc... There's even a little bit of screamo in their song Thank You if that's what you like.

Yes, I can definatly see how the same beat repeated over and over, and a guy talking (Not singing, talking, rappers can't sing) really fast about how he fucked 30 women with his 12 foot penis is awesome. </sarcasm>
Also, meth? You're saying rock listeners are meth users? WHAT THE FUCK?
Old-school rap (Pre-2000) is better than most rap created today.
Rock by-far is the best. In no other genre do you have drummers with as high of talent as they do, guitarists with as much talent, basists with as much talent, and singers that ACTUALLY can SING!
Underground_Network
June 5th, 2009, 09:21 PM
Both of you are ignorant. Not all rock is amazing, but not all rap is terrible either. I find that both can be pretty good... But then again I'm a huge music buff and I like pretty much anything with a beat... Though I also prefer songs with lyrics... Things like Miserlou (alternative spelling Misirlou) never get old though...

Where does it say that singing is required to be considered good music? Rock is so gay, because all those new age band sing about is killing themselves or screaming about some dragons or gay shit like that. Jeez rock is so random. They just fuckin make random ass songs. Driving through bat country... Wtf is does that even mean.

I love how you didn't say anything abut the talent level of the musicians. So you agree that rap musicians have little-no talent?
I can see how a song about people killing themselves makes rock happy (Gay DOES = happy btw).
Also, I've never heard a rock song, or heard about a rock song that was about dragons, maybe you can find one for me?

True, but some of the newer stuff ain't half bad. Its mainly the main stream rap... The rap that is shoved down our throats, that really requires no talent and can get to be quite f-ing annoying...
But I do agree with you about the talent of some rock musicians... There are some really good bassists, drummers, vocalists, etc. that no one has even heard of... There are a lot more "rock" bands than rappers out there (at least in terms of notoriety)...

I'm not really into a lot of rap music, but I must admit there are many talented and skilled rappers out there who write amazing lyrics. I'm more of an alternative rock/metal kind of person myself, but not all rock is great at all! In fact, just as much as there are awful rappers, there is rock music that sounds like utter garbage. There are rappers out there that can put lots of rock musicians to shame.

Rap rock ftw. Who knew two sounds that people think of as so different could sound so f-ing awesome together? Hollywood Undead, Linkin Park, Chronic Future, and Trik Turner are all good rap rock bands. And there are plenty others too... That and most of those bands don't limit themselves to rap and rock in all of their songs, they like to mix things up... (Especially Chronic Future)

Most to all of the 'rock' songs about death, anger, suicide and various related issues are not whinging about their life, they're not being depressive. The moral of those songs is that people shouldn't fall victim to what they have, and that with the help inspirational music you can pull through whatever's in your life.
As for 'random-ass' songs, they would be about things that interest the lyricist, for example Cyanide (Metallica) is wriiten as a result of Hetfields' interest in suicide and various related motives/implications. On a slightly fantasy/sci fi note, there are bands that write that sort of thing, e.g. 2112 by Rush, which is a prog epic set in (yeh you guessed it) 2112.
Also many seemingly 'random' songs are actually about drugs and their perceived affect. E.g., those who are unaware of the term 'snowblind' and its connections with cocaine would be clueless as to the subject of Snowblind by Black Sabbath. Similarly Sweet Leaf (except that one is about marijuana), by the same band.
Some songs simply tell a story, e.g. Get Stoned by Hinder, or are love songs based around a particular situation Lips Of An Angel (Hinder)
I find 'Broken Beat & Scarred' by Metallica to be particularly helpful in times of stress; link here:

...Then I grew up and realized that alienating my palette of music based on genre is ignorant, superficial nonsense that's perpetuated by archetypes and imbeciles. Or to speak more lucidly, identifying yourself with a genre of music shows that you have no depth. There are plenty of other things in the world to identify with; music is a minuscule subject.
I guarantee that all of you who are complaining about a genre knows nothing of it.

I think that most rap is okay. If you think that "rap" is "loud heavy ear shatering" then I hope you don't like rock or metal because I think that is louder and more obnoxious that rap. I don't like some rap but I do like some others. Rap is very poetic and sometimes have a really good message. I think that people really underestimate it for the bass or beat and don't listen or look up the lyrics.
I think that Rock or Metal is not any better than rap and rockers not any better than rappers. Rappers are usually really talented because it is really hard to freestyle or just rhyme in general.

Damn, some of you are very ignorant to not only rap music but music in general. I love how people say rap is degrading to women and cusses every other line. Hello? Rock music is that way too. And it does take a lot of talent to rap over beats and have a nice flow and breath control and all of that. Rap lyrics are poetic and beautiful. Rappers are great storytellers and most of the time their lyrics hold a very good message. Matter of fact, rap probably has the best lyrics out of any other genre. Oh and the rap group The Roots, play their own instruments so it's not just "electronic beats" that they rap over.

What a horribly ignorant and close-minded thing to say. I suggest you look into the rap genre a bit more before judging it like that. You know, some metal/rock music is retarded - take some of the awful singing and screeches that sound like wailing cats being dragged up a wall and some of the irritating repetitive guitar riffs that even my 5 year old cousin could do better than. With some bands it's almost as if they're having a competition who can play their instrument the loudest and all.

There's rap about having sex with random women and getting drunk/high, but there's the same shit in rock. If you don't expose yourself to all the different artists there are in a certain genre, you'll never understand what the genre is like completely. I don't listen to rap that had an intense sexual or degrading overtone, just like I don't listen to the rock songs with such messages. I like rock, I like rap, I like pop, I like R&B, pretty much everything. it's about specific artists and songs, not genres.

However, don't say there isn't good rap because there is. If you ever actually listen to some of Eminem's more deep songs, you'll find a deeper meaning in them. Seriously. Listen to When I'm Gone, Hailey's Song, Cleaning Out My Closet, and Like Toy Soldiers by him. They're awesome.

For starters, I'm shocked at the level of ignorance and arrogance throughout this thread (with far and few who thankfully weren't).
I think all music, whether it's someone talking fast to a rhythm to shredding on a guitar to folk tales, etc... all of it takes talent. I'm a fan of metal, rock and some jazz/blues, however, I have a few rap artists who I like. I'm not a great fan of the gangsta rap or the rap where it's going incredibly fast or the cookie-cutter rap about cars, money, your kinky sex life, women/hoes, etc..., unless it is quite good. Rap such as Eminem, Linkin Park and other rap artists that don't go very fast and are unique is what I like.
For the ones that rap very fast, although I may not be a fan of it, they do have talent and every now and then, I'll take a listen. It's nice to be open-minded to the world of music rather than simply staying in your little sheltered-off corner of the room and spitting in the face of everything else.
If you really dislike it, then don't listen to it. But there's no reason to be arrogant and ignorant towards it, then go about and say "[music genre/band] is the best". Hypocrisy never fails.
Much of what I've read throughout this thread did not mention the amount of talent needed to produce the music, the amount of dedication and time spent composing the songs. Sad really.

I prefer him over Jeezy though, no doubt about it. I still haven't listened to Ice Cubes new album but nothing can compare to what is old stuff was, same with Dre.

I'm not trying to play "the race card" here, but how come when everyone mentions good rappers, they mention white rappers? Just something I noticed...
The only rapper I actually follow happens to be white. I've noticed most of the black rappers I've listened to rap about gangs and stuff like that.

My definition of rap: Someone who thinks they're cool for being able to talk to a beat about how they have to hire whores because they can't get a girlfriend.
hmm.
Ignorant much?
Rap is a great genre. Stereotyping a WHOLE genre is so stupid. Its like me saying "Heavy Metal is for and is about Worshipping Satan". I love Metal as well, and I am a Christian. Not all Metal is about Demonic shit, just like not all Rap is gangsta and about the hood. Get outta here with that ignorant stuff.

Don't worry I don't think you're racist. Have you ever thought though, that most black rappers rap about gangs because that's what they grew up in? And I'm not talking about the mainstream rappers today, because most suck. I'm talking about people/groups like Biggie, Tupac, Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang, etc. They're really good talented rappers but they can say some pretty bad things. It doesn't make their music bad, and I really don't expect someone who's already a little iffy on rap to like gangsta rap. Gangsta rap is actually a really misunderstood genre, imo. It just sort of angers me when people say "I hate rap that degrades women and talks about gangs and cusses a lot but oh I love me some Eminem". I'm kind of like "Wtf". He says some pretty messed up stuff but yet people like him over gangster rappers. It just makes it hard to not play the race card when people say stuff like that.

Lupe Fiasco may be done making solo music but he still has that colab with Kanye and Pharrell. Honestly I don't think he's going to be done.

Rap/rock is fucking orgasmic. Then again, my opinion is most likely biased since two of my favorite bands are Linkin Park and Hollywood undead lol. I haven't heard a lot of Chronic Future. I think I'll check them out, though. They seem interesting.

I'm talking about albums. A classic is something that's widely recognized by the hip-hop community. Like Reasonable Doubt, Blueprint, In My Lifetime Vol.1, American Gangster. Ready To Die - Notorious B.I.G, Paid In Full - Eric B and Rakim. Midnight Marauders - A Tribe Called Quest. These are all classics.
Well, Jay grew up without a father but that shouldn't matter when talking about who's the better rapper. Things that make a rapper good is Delivery, Flow, Lyrics, Wordplay, Originality etc. Well Jeezy has a horrible flow and delivery. His lyrics aren't anything special and he doesn't really have wordplay or any other technique. And he's like a carbon copy of other rappers so not that much originality.
Trap Muzik and KING are great albums. They could be called classics overtime. T.I. is a much better rapper than Jeezy though so he has the potential to come up with classics.

I think it's time you realize this. You can ask anyone who actually knows something about hip-hop and they'll say Jay has one of the best flows ever. Jeezy's flow is so slow and unnatural sounding. You think jay-z can say "kill at will. Solid water, Ice cube.". Really?.... Really!?those lyrics are so wack it almost is a low blow. The reason you dont like jeezy is because he is to real and ghetto for you. His beats are ghetto beats along with his lyrics. He is the epitome of a gangster rapper right out of the trap. Now... LOL. This is gonna be too easy.
Okay, Ice Cube has a song called 'Kill at Will' and "You Gots To Chill" is a song by EPMD. The line by Jay-Z that you're referring to is:
If you rip on your EP you gonna need an MD
So "You Gots to Chill" cause I "Kill at Will"
like solid water dude; y'all n!ggaz don't get it
"Kill at Will," solid water? Ice Cube.
It's actually a really clever play on words. It would make more sense when you hear him rap it. Jeezy would never come up with anything nearly as clever as that. He practically is rapping nursery rhymes.
I don't care how 'hard' or 'ghetto' Jeezy is. He's still a horrible rapper. No the epitome of Gangsta Rap is Tupac, Biggie, Eazy E. All of them are actually GOOD rappers too. I find it unjust how you're calling all these horrible rappers great and you don't even recognize the greats. And no Jay-Z is somewhat a gangsta rapper. Reasonable Doubt was one of the first mafioso rap albums. It would be more weird to compare Common and Tupac because one is a gangsta rapper and one is a conscious rapper. Hopefully you know which one is which.
Wait.. you think Kanye West is the best rapper today or ever?

Yeah damn right I don't listen to him. He's horrible and your mind is warped if you think he's good. Fans like you are the reason why great hip-hop has diminished and artists like Soulja Boy and Lil Wayne are on top. You promote trash.
ALL OF THEM ARE HIP-HOP RAPPERS. There is different kinds of hip-hop though. There's gangster rap and conscious/afro-centric rap and then there's the bubble-gum pop-rap which would be Soulja Boy. Rap is not really a genre, rap is what HIP-HOP ARTISTS do.

Haha that's cute how you think I'm getting mad because I'm a girl and I must be PMSing. That truly shows how childish and ignorant you are.
#1. That is actually somewhat true because sometimes people rap in rock and other genres besides hip-hop but it wouldn't be called hip-hop music. So good job for finally saying something that makes sense. BUT, Jeezy IS still a hip-hop artist.
#2. You show the ignorance of a Soulja Boy fan so I'll lump you in with one.
#3. I agree. I like him. He's a good rapper. He's not better than Jay-Z though.
#4. Again, I agree. It's a good thing that being a good rapper isn't decided by looks, huh? Jay-Z would certainly be a pretty bad rapper if that was the case. Being a good rapper isn't decided by looks though, it is decided by Flow, Delivery, Lyrical Content, Technique and Originality like it should be, so Jay-Z is one of the best ever.
#5. Jay-Z and Kanye West's record sales are pretty equal. Every album that Kanye West came out with has gone Platinum+ and every album that Jay-Z came out with has gone Platinum+. Like I said before and I will keep saying till it gets into that head of yours, Record Sales does not determine the talent of an artist. Lupe Fiasco's The Cool went gold while Tha Carter III went Platinum. Lupe Fiasco is obviously more talented than Lil Wayne. Annnd no, while Kanye West's lyrics are good they're not better than Jays. Maybe a really great Kanye West line might be better than an average Jay line, but that's about it.

What? How do you even get that out of what I said? I know he has money and I guess he grew up in the hood, I'll take his word for it. But just because he has money doesn't mean he has to rap about it all the time, and maybe he can do it in a more creative way.
