Hello everyone,

i am writing to ask whether you think i will go bald, im 15 and my dad has a full head of hair (hes 53), but im not sure whether i will go bald. Most of my genes are from his side because my hair started going wavy at 13 (about the same age as his did) but i am quite hairy (my legs are hairier than his already) and my mother said that her dad had very hairy legs, and he went bald. I'm also 6ft tall (hes 5ft10) and most of the men on my mothers side are about 5ft6-8. The reason i mentioned hairiness was because i read that hairier men tend to go bald.

I really hope i dont go bald because i like my hair but tell me what you think

Nobody can tell when you're going to go bald. But i'm pretty sure it won't be anytime soon. You're only 15.

Actually, you can tell if you have male pattern baldness.

If it is common in your family, then you should get checked. Mothers are the carriers for the gene that causes male pattern baldness, but it doesn't show in them because it only reacts to high levels of testosterone, which women produce little of.

You can get genetic counseling, and a gene map to check and see if you have it in advance, and there are a few cures out there for it. Ask your maternal grandfather (mom's dad) about what age he started balding. If it was in his late teens, then there is a good chance you'll have it, as that is when testosterone is highest in the body.

If not any of this, some men just lose their hair. It hasn't happened yet, so don't worry.

Regardless of what the genetic code in your hair follicles might say, at 15 your safe for a while, at least.

Recent advances include minoxidil, an OTC medication that has been shown to promote hair growth, as well as various surgical advances in hair transplants. We can assume that advances in medicine will continue, so IF you should lose your hair, there might be even more effective treatments at that time. We landed on the moon, afterall.

Did you ask your mom at which age your grandfather started going bald? If the hair on your head is pretty strong now, I don't recommend fussing about it now. You should start worrying about it once puberty is over with.
