First, it depends on how long you swim. Calories are lost through excercise, and other means, but they get lost the most with excercise. I can't tell you how long it would take YOU to swim 10 miles, only you know how fast you can swim.

Well that would depend how fast you're swimming, your Body Fat Percentage, how much you weigh, what you eat...

Moving to VT General Hospital.

Swimming ten miles is a lot, I think. It would take a large amount of time, especially for beginners. But as said above, really only you can tell.

And yes, you loose weight/stomach flab by exercising.

Ten fucking miles? You gotta be kidding me. that's like marathon lenght. Don't even THINK of trying this unless you've had a SHIT FUCKING LOAD of training.

Swimming does burn a lot of calories. True, because there's the water resistance and the movement and the speed. .. well you get it it's like running with weights but less joint damage.

Em, you also need to eat a relativly balanced diet.. if you eat 100% junk food and swim average-competitively (2/3hrs a day) you'll still be fat, and not have a six pack

Swimming does burn calories, just like anything else. At my camp we have a lake that is five miles in circumference. It takes our best swimmers 4 hours to complete. And thats after a huge amount of training. Swim a lot though and you will burn calories just like any exercise

You can't just swim like ten miles and then automatically get a six pack.

1. Burning calories gets rid of the layer of fat on your stomach that blocks the muscles from being seen.
2. The abdominal muscles (6 pack) need to be exercised in order to get bigger and be visible.
3. We already have two other threads with people asking the exact same question. Here is the answer to one of them: http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showpost.php?p=527035&postcount=7

And, unless you have a thing for becoming DEAD, then you wouldn't want to even attempt a 10 mile swim at beginner level, without a motorboat beside you at all times.

swimming is a great exercise but alone it will not give you a six pack. is you burn more calories then you eat you start burning fat which makes muscles more noticeable

10 Miles would definitely take HOURS. I swim competitively and during a typical short course (25 yard) 2 hour practice we would do about 6000 yards, which is 3.4 miles. Thats with about 3 or 4 5 minute breaks. I'm not the fastest during practice and it takes me around 17 mins to do 1000 yards, which isn't even a mile. 10 miles is 17600 yards, which would take a LONG time, I would not advise it without a shitload of prior training. And it won't get you an instant 6-pack, I don't have one and nearly all of the boys on my team don't have one either.

I honestly don't think that you should swim to get a six pack. You should go to a weight room and use machines that work on abs. Get an aerobic ball and do things. Join a class at your local gym. Do some crunches and sit ups.
Swim? Not really.
