I have a friend who also cuts, and we kind of help each other out. I'm never quite sure what I can say though when he badly wants to cut, because I can't stop him from doing it, only discourage him. I'm always worried I'll say the wrong thing, and make it worse.

I didn't mean help each other cut, I meant help each other not cut!

Its great you have someone to talk to about it!
Heres a list of things that could discourage a self harmer :
- Itll only make it harder to quit by giving in.
- The pleasurable feeling is only temporary and once that feeling goes youll feel even worse.
- Scars are permanent. They last a lifetime.
- Clothes. There will be clothes that you want to buy but cant because they dont cover up the cuts. Especially as Summer is round the corner so there will be new clothes in the shops.
- Cutting prevents you from going swimming.
- The cuts will get deeper and deeper as time goes by. It could become serious and a trip to the A&E might be needed at some point.
- Tell them about the stories that self injurers have had to face when seeking medical advice e.g being refused injections to numb the pain because apparently they can deal with it.
- Tell them that the addiction is all in their head. They dont really need to cut.
- Tell them to imagine themselve as a child. Now ask them if they could grab that childs body and cut it. Could they really do it to themself?
- Tell them they are strong, that you love them, and that you can quit together.
Take Care
