Hey guys, I wrote this poem for english class, a bit of a soft-deterministic rant on life, the universe, and everything. Tell me what you think!
There is no such thing as objective Free Will
Though at this point, I’d like to think so.
It was an unbroken chain of cause and effect
Ever since the beginning of everything
This was bound to happen, bound to be written.
Ever since the Sun’s ignition it was the sole mission
Of the physical laws of the universe
To reach this precise place and moment in time
Ever since my primordial ancestors left the soup, then the seas
All manner of life grew, lived and died
Except for the ancestors leading up to me
The thunderous beasts dominated the earth until that day
Their deaths came from the sky
And mammals claimed dominion over their kingdom; they thrived
Out of the mess of mutations and speciation,
Primates gave rise to a new kind of creature; walked upright,
And just a bit smarter than the rest
All the course of life’s history, its mystery, allowed for that specific
Unbroken chain of cause and effect
Over three thousand million years of evolution, and now
I’m here.
There is no such thing as objective Free Will
Though at this point, I’d like to think so.

Ever since the beginning of everything
