A fire at the landmark Sydney Tower has sent plumes of black smoke over the heart of the city.

The fire began at 8.30am from the tower's 12th floor, above the Westfield Centrepoint shopping centre on Market Street.

Four fire trucks rushed to the scene of the famous tourist attraction and firefighters extinguished the blaze within 20 minutes, a NSW Fire Brigades spokesman said.

The shopping centre has been closed in recent weeks due to renovations.

Construction workers were present when the fire broke out in an air conditioning unit external to Sydney Tower and were able to guide firefighters directly to the blaze, the NSW Brigades spokesman said.

No one was injured and there were no evacuations.

The fire did not spread beyond the air conditioning unit.

Wow...when I read that I thought it was a terrorist attack. Gawd, I am so tainted :P

Anyways, thats scary. I went on top of the TV Tower in Berlin once, and I think I would pee my pants if I saw smoke anywhere near that building.
Its good that nothing bad happened though :)
