So i was wondering if drug addiction is hereditary? thats what my mom tells me at least. my biological mom is a drug addict and now my brother is too. She always says Its all in your genes, so if you try drugs only once you will be addicted like this *snaps finger*.
so is she true?
or is that even possible?
im confused :what:

I think it sort of is. You won't be a drug addict if you never touch the stuff Sterling. :)

But you might be more likely to be a drug addict because your mom and your brother were. Genes don't make you a drug addict, but they determine how you react to certain drugs (sort of). Some people have a tendency of getting more easily addicted than others.

So long as you never touch drugs you should be fine Sterling. :)

Not really. It's more to do with having an addictive personality generally. For example, do you get obsessed/fixated with a tv show, song etc etc? Probably, as many of us do. Many people have (and possibly inherit) addictive personalities, but only a few end up drug addicts or whatever. Stay out of the wrong crowds and you'll be fine ;)

I didn't mean physically react. I meant tendency toward addiction. Straight out of the mouth of my bio-honors teacher (from last year): Genes don't make you do something, but they CAN make you more likely to repeatedly do something after doing it once. And this includes drugs and alcohol. Alcoholism and drug addiction are at least PARTIALLY genetic. It isn't predetermined that you will be a drug addict, but if you touch drugs it may be in your genes that you'll be more likely to CONTINUE using them and find it HARDER TO STOP.

But yer... That's just what my bio teacher said; she honestly could be wrong.

Apoligies, I didnt see the "tendancy" part, but which I basically repeated :(
FAIL on my part.

Its fine, I certainly could have worded what I said better. ;)

I just want Sterling (who I've gotten to know really well :)), to know that she's not necessarily going to be a drug addict... And that if she stays away from drugs she definitely won't become one.

Also just to add, you've probably heard of babies who are born addicted to drugs; if a mother does drugs during the pregnancy, the baby is sometimes born with the addiction to that drug.

Other than that, I think it's more of a "nurture>nature" thing, where how you grew up and what you were taught is more powerful than the natural genes you were born with that you inherited from your parents. If you grow up with drug addicted parents, you may be more likely to become addicted, just because that's how you grew up- around drugs. If they did drugs before they were pregnant, it wouldn't change their genetic make up, so it wouldn't affect you.

well, it's possible that you have an addictive personality passed down in genes, but really, addiction only forms when you decide to start it.
So if you're worried about getting addicted to something, there's no need to worry if you stay away from it :)
