Teen Robs Shop With Banana Then Eats Evidence

A teenager was caught trying to rob a store with a banana - then ate the makeshift weapon to destroy the evidence.

Sadly for John Szwalla he was unable to swallow the skin which was duly photographed by police in North Carolina, America.

The 17-year-old is currently in the county jail charged with attempted armed robbery.

The bizarre drama began when Szwalla entered the 109 Biz Center in Winston-Salem with a banana under his shirt.

The hapless thief told staff in the internet cafe that he had a gun and demanded cash, according to local reports.

Owner Bobby Ray Mabe said he and a customer jumped on to Szwalla, pinning him into a chair before deputies arrived.

But while they waited for police, Mabe says the teen stuffed the banana into his mouth and swallowed it.

When deputies arrived they took pictures of the banana peel instead.

Forsyth County Sheriff's office spokesman Major Brad Stanley said police joked about charging Szwalla with destroying evidence.

"If he had had a gun he would've shot me," Mabe said yesterday.

"But he had a banana," he added.

Szwalla faces a charge of attempted armed robbery. Jail officials said he does not have an lawyer.

Szwalla is in the Forsyth County Jail, with bond set at £35,000.

Hmm, I think that's the first time I've seen an article about something in America done by someone in the UK. :P

Its funny to see something about bail being set at £35,000 when in reality he has to pay $ (insert correct amount here) lol... :P

But yeah, that is pretty interesting. He should have at least used an apple. Then you can throw that at the shop owner if he isn't willing to give you the money.

What an idiot kid...

Yeah, but I've seen articles written in the United States about things happening in the UK/Europe where they have things written in your currency as opposed to our currency... Its annoying. :D

I understand that its easier for you to understand though, it was just weird to me lol. That and I've never seen North Carolina (or any state), America written in a news article before. :) Where else is there a North Carolina? Somewhere in China? :P

Not everyone here knows many American States so it makes sense to write it like that.

Yes he had a fruit but it was with how he used the fruit. It's like saying I have a bicycle, so what? But then I go about and somehow impale someone's head with it. It's just a bicycle but it matters on how I use it. Or even a cue ball, it's just a little ball. But, I go and throw it at someone who gets a broken nose, so now I got assault on my hands, but it's just a little ball. It depends on how you use it and how you intend to use it.

armed robbery is taking that a bit far.. you can't use a fucking banana as a weapon.

or does immitating a weapon count as 'armed' even though he wasn't?

I think it does count as armed robbery because he led everyone to believe that he was armed.

Why can't it be charged as attempted armed robbery?

How in the hells are you supposed to use a banana as a firearm? WTF!? What are you supposed to do? Squeeze it and splatter your opponent with the contents? Basically, I'm saying that those who charged him with armed robbery were just plain stupid. Okay, so maybe he tried to commit robbery, but by no means should it have been classed as armed! I fail to see how a banana can be used as a lethal weapon.
