compression shorts (can be worn as underwear)

trunks (like very short boxer briefs, usually without fly)

Boxers are worn by the majority of males in our generation. Not only is the greater freedom with the testicles better for various (including health) reasons, but I find them more comfortable. I would hate the feeling of my genitals being traped and held fast in tight briefs. So, boxers and boxers alone.

Boxers and sometimes boxer-briefs or just briefs. But it depends on what I'm wearing... If I have gym, I wouldn't want my junk flying around everywhere and knocking the basketball out of my hand. So I wear some tight briefs. =D But most of the time I like it loose.
