Man Sentenced to Life for Sex with Woman

A Ramsey County jury has found a St. Paul man guilty of murder in the death of a mother of four who bled to death from severe injuries.
The jury convicted Michael Carrasco Sontoya on Thursday night of first- and second-degree murder in the death of 31-year-old Gabriela Patricia Romo of Inver Grove Heights last September.
Sontoya claimed to police they went out for drinks, then went back to his apartment for consensual sex.
But Romo bled to death from a 14-inch injury that began in her genital area and extended to her liver, spleen and diaphragm.
Ramsey County Attorney Susan Gaertner said in her closing argument that nobody consents to that.
Sontoya faces a mandatory prison term of life without the possibility of parole when he's sentenced at 9:30 a.m Friday.


He was sentenced to life in prison. One count of first degree and one count of second degree murder.

But yea, I mean...life in prison...I don't think this merits life. Why? Because...I mean...I don't think he meant to kill her...although when she was bleeding,, he should have done something...but maybe he was scared/embarrased. ehh. Okay...now that I think about it...Life is still a bit harsh, but he deserves a long time.

Even if he didn't mean too, she might not even have died if he called 911 right away.
But no, he waited until hours later after dressing her, taking a photo of her naked dead body, attempting to clean up the crime, and flipping the mattress.

If he had called right away, without changing the crime scene and she did die still, it would still probably only be man slaughter.

How can you not contemplate killing someone by shoving your hand forcably through their vaginal wall and into their abdominal cavity?

Well...i mean...I don't think it was pre-meditated which is often the difference between the degrees of muder(however he was charged wiht both)...like he thought to himself hours before, "Im going to kill her via vagina". Idk...I mean...I totally totally think that he deserves time. I just don't think that we should waste our prison system on something like this. I don't think he is going to do it again...

I don't think that putting him in jail for the rest of his life will protect us as citizens and/or be completely effective for him.
10 years? Sure. 20 years? Sure. 30 years sure?
But 50+ years is a waste of tax payer money I think.
I, personally, don't view this guy as a threat to society. After some jail time, I think he is going to get it. I don't view him as a threat is because after he did this, I think he was in panic mode. Obviously he got carried away during sex, realized what he did, then tried to cover it up. I don't think he had an intent to do this before they had their session. He was drunk, judgement was realllly farrrrrr doowwwwnnnnnnnnnnnn, and idk. I just don't think he will do this to another woman. And also, its not like this was some random lady. They were in a relationship I believe.
So idk. thats my opinion. I dont think a life sentance is over doing it. I think 20 years would be fine. But the judge ruled according to state laws, and thats what he got.

A life sentence doesn't equate to 50+ years. A life sentence varies in length from about 15 years to a maximum of 50 years. The likelihood of this guy getting 50 years is grossly unlikely.

I think you are being too lenient. There isn't evidence that he panicked. I have yet to find something which stated that he was drunk. And getting carried away would involve causing more pain than initially meant but stopping when you realise this. However tearing through her vaginal wall and damaging her spleen, liver and diaphragm is something completely different. He wanted to really cause damage.

To me he (a) failed to report a criminal offense, (b) tampered with a corpse which would be tampering with evidence, (c) lying to the police, (d) sexual assault, (e) death of the victim due to (d) and (f) possibly rape due to highly unliklihood that she consented to the extreme fisting. I can understand fisting a girl, however, fisting up to their liver and diaphragm is rather unheard of. That requires shoving your arm up there, which even if it was not meant to cause death, it was sexual assault and sexual violence leading to death.

Seeing as how he committed other crimes as indicated above, I'll be satisfied with around 30-40 years or possibly life with parole.
