My friend came into school on Monday with a large cut on her forearm. She told us that she did it with a piece of glass and that she did it to show some boy what it was like. She then began showing people her scar.
Since then, she has got a one or two more scars on her arm and some 'chicken stratches'. So far they haven't broken skin apart from the first one.
She isn't depressed and she says it's fun and it stops her from getting bored.
She asks myself and my other friends if she can borrow rulers or scissors so she can cut her arm and obviously we say no.
It doesn't seem to bother her but it's starting to bother me and I'm not sure how my other friends feel about it.
She is quite talkative and if something was going on at home, she would tell us so I don't think there is anything to cause her to do this.

What can I do to try and keep this situation from getting worse or even stop it?

IMO, you should stop it as fast as you can. Maybe she is just doing it for the adrenaline rush, in that case, maybe you could find a substitute for cutting, something thrilling.

OR maybe something is going on at home, try talking to your friend alone or with your and her closest friends.

Cutting is a serious problem, and it could escalate if you do not nip it right now.

Honestly I think she just wants attention, Next time she asks for scissors give her them then say, tomorrow bring your own, Call her bluff. No one enjoys cutting them self’s.

When she ask for scissors she expects you to say no, do the opposite and see how fast she’ll stop cutting her self, ignore it. I know that sounds bad but from your story she sounds like an idiot. No offence.

She sounds like she's trying to get some sort of reaction from you, maybe you should ask her if everything is ok. She shouldn't be doing this just for the fun of it, because cutting is serious and can turn into a real problem.

She's an attention seeker.. end of story. But still make her stop, because it can get addicting whether it's for attention or not.
