The simplicity is what makes them so unique and desired.
And listen to Red, he's an ass, but he knows what he is talking about.

He's a good guy, but he's a pain.
He's the reason I got into sig making.

I absolutely suck at sig-making. Can I use this in Paint.NET? >_>

Smudging > Try looking up a GIMP smudge tut, again, I'm not familiar with this program. From what I've heard from Ichi, use the Vine brush or Chalk brush, and you WON'T be able to replicate my effect most likely, and smudging takes practice, and a good bit of it.
If you search GIMP while working on a sig, you should see near the layers panel, it should say "Normal" and beside it in another box "100%" The normal is the blend modes ie linear dodge, vivid light, play with these effects and see what you like best.

Paint.net? Good luck, I highly doubt you would be able to do this. My recommendation: www.gimp.org download it. xD

Not extensively, but I know it's hard to replicate this in it. ;)
