I am in the process of coming out to some family members. My mom knows. I have a sister who is ten and i was wondering if i should tell her. My mom is gay and she told her but i think that she did that because her partner lives with us. Bottom line is-Is it inappropriate to tell my ten year old sister i am gay? is this to much for her being so young. If yes how should i do it. Thank you!

Anywayz i think maybe a little longer, a little ignoracne as a child helps keep the innocence. Wait till she actually knows about gay people and is more mature. Like teen years as 13-16. But its your sexuality and you can decide when. If youre close with your sister she may figure it out, and it will be easier because she wont be surprised. So for now i'd reccomend getting closer to your sister

You make that decision yourself, you need to figure out and think hard whether you believe its appropriate or not kind of material to part take in with your sister. Its that simple.

Two things to consider: 1) What her understanding and reaction to it will likely be, and 2) What your expectations are, what you hope to gain from discloing this info to her.

If your mom is gay and her partner lives with you, the unusualness of a gay lifestyle isn't so unusual to her. However, the real issue isn't so much that, but rather what she'll likely make of it and how it will help her, or you. In that way, it's really no different than sharing anything else that's uber-personal.

i think that you need to assess your sister yourself and decide if you think she is old enough to be told and if she would understand what you are telling her. but as said above if your mom is gay then she may already have understanding about the whole thing.

its probably better to tell her now than when she is 13-16 because at that age the whole gay negative stereotype starts to set in at schools and a lot of homophobic talk starts.

its probably helpful to remember that if your sister asks you questions after you tell her its best to answer as honestly as you can. if shes old enough to ask then shes old enough to be told, rather than sugar coating real life issues and making her more ignorant.

Well she does know what gay is because my moms girlfriend lives with us and they gave her a talk about it.
