I'm gay and after telling certain people, mainly girls, they'll say something like "oh i love gay people! they're so funny!" or something else to that effect. This bothers me because although it's a positive stereotype its still a stereotype and i hate being generalized like that. Obviously id prefer a positive stereotype being directed at me than hate but sometimes this stereotype nags at me and i don't like it. Does any other gay person feel this way and if you're straight do you dislike this generalizing of gay people as well? Thank you for reading this post! :)

As a heterosexual, I'd rather have people not hate homosexuals, although ideally, have them formulate profiles of the homosexual after meeting him/her, however, that's not likely to happen.

The reason why I'm not entirely opposed to the generalizing is because it is not entirely false. Are homosexuals funny, witty, etc...? Of course they are. If it was a completely false generalization then I'd have an issue with it.

I think I know what he's getting at. But I think the topic creator doesn't like the generalization because maybe he's not witty and funny?

As much as I hate generalizing, I have to say I do it myself (lol hypocrite). I mean, don't you yourself generalize. Do you never make jokes about the odd Asian, or the African, or anything?

I certainly do.

Right, I would take a positive stereotype over a neagative one, but yes, I would prefer no stereotype and let people form their own opinions of people since we are all individuals.

The OP may not be funny nor witty, however, being stereotyped to be that seems better than the reactions of "ewww, gay!!!!".

Everyone does generalize, and yes, I'm guilty of it also. I try not to when I meet someone, however, it does happen.

sterotypes are constant, they wont go away. i would take positive sterotypes because kids and teens make fun of anything. so a positve anything is a blessing. positve ones as "all asians are smart" "gays are jolly" "jews are Gods chosen" are positive. Ur not in a perfect world where people will see who u really are, they see who thy think u are. I would take the "compliment" because its really all your gonna get other then jokes and sneers
