View Full Version : VT Mock-Trial
IAMWILL

Hey Everybody, I am Will and I am here with my 791st post, 62nd started thread. Anyway, the other night I was in bed just thinking about how colleges and most high schools do mock-trials. I thought, "Wouldn't it be great if VT had a mock-trial forum or diary?" Lots of teens here like to argue and debate, so why not do something that is near real life? You may ask, well... who's going to come up with the cases or things like that, but really, its simple. If legal, (because i'm not sure), we could just borrow the situations from real cases across the world. A jury could easily be made up of normal members that like this idea and would participate, and having four people being the lawyers and defendants and others should be quite easy. One of the advantages of this is not all members of this forum have to be online at the same time, because they could simply view the posts made by (insert whoever posted here).
Now, I know this is a far fetched idea, but I think its possible. Hope you people agree!

What?
Can you explain that more clearly?

i think i know what you mean. it sounds like a good idea but it would get difficult to play it on a forum. but if you find a way and are allowed im up for it

I think you may be onto something. I would definitely participate. Someone should create a diary and post several trials and have members PM new ideas for the trials. For each trial, the members involved choose one side (out of two) and debate. I am willing to help if this goes further, as long as someone else can handle most of it.

I agree with Calum, it's a great idea, but how could you actively, and easily, play this on a forum?

If you think it's a good idea, I'd go for it and request a diary. If you can set up strong, solid guidelines it could work really well.

I think that's an awesome idea! :D
I'd be up for helping as much as possible.

I'd love to help out or be involved if you can get your idea to get off of the ground = ]
Like Bobby said, start by getting a diary for it and make solid rules and guidelines.

Tough, but if it works out well; well, it could really work out.
I'll help out minimally, but I'll certainly get involved if it looks to be heading in the right direction.

It sounds like a really good idea but really hard to pull off properably. If you get it up and running than i would love to help out in the running and also take part in it.

Ditto. I know quite a bit about criminal law too, so yeah, I would enjoy it, I think.

I'm up for it as well. Though it will take some thinking it through.
As long as it is well managed and really thought out, i dont see why this can't work.

That is a brilliant idea. The more things like this to get people involved the better.

That's a great idea! I would love to take part in that, I have a keen interest in criminal stuff etc.
Yeah it could be the VT Court. BUT, here's my problem, who's law would it focus on? Britain's or America's? Or any other country for that matter, as its all very different, we do things differently to the US.

hey that would be cool! I've had experience with participating in 3 mock trials at college, they're really fun. I think it might be illegal to take real life trials, coz it might be classed as the same thing as writing them in a book...you know on one of the first pages in fictional books that has a little paragraph saying 'Any resemblance to real people or real life situations is purely coincidental...bla bla bla' Or something similar.

Okay people! Here's the deal. I'm going to put in a request for a diary. If I get the diary, one of the first things I will do is make a list of the people who are interested ad therefore responsible if they are needed in a fake trial or something else. If there is no way they can around, they will be simply replaced. Now, if I'm right, we'll need anywhere from 10 to 17 people (depending on what people want the size of the jury to be). I'm going to need a lot of help here, because I'm not almighty law man. I will set up a poll in the diary when I get it to wether we should use the British or American judicial set up, and all that is included, for those are the most well known. Considering this is a large task, were going to need multiple moderators for the diary. The moderators will simply be the most active in the diary that can make good deciscions reliably.
Otherwise, I'm still plannning in my head. Thanks for all the support though :) I'm gonna need it.

Damn, you're so smart. I love this idea, it would be great. Count me in.
I don't think they're any legal obstacles since the 'case' info is generally available to the public, and the process is non binding. I think our resident legal pro Jared might be called upon to provide legal advice in general, and maybe be the presiding Judge.
I also think, given the often heated nature of these things, that Rep be turned off for that diary so people don't need to concern themselves with the back biting and sniping that often accompanies a difference of opinion.

If people are that concerned over it they need to get a grip.

Leave the rep system alone.
Who cares honestly.
i hope this is in good fun, and people don't bitch over a game.

Exactly... I don't see why everyone has to make a big deal about the rep system...If you get negative rep, suck it up.

*cracks whip* The sooner the better. I'm tired of being the chair prosecutor, just because I never lost a case. *hardens teeth and cracks whip 3 more times continously with no breaks*

Yea, I think it would be a good idea. We did a mock trial in...4th grade (oh god, im gettin old) and it was uber fun. Also, I am thinking of a law career so it would be fun for me in that aspect too. So do it! lol :)

I'll join! count me in as a big part! and about the law system. this may be a little radical but how about we decide everything on plain common sense and the similarities between all countries. And for the big differences between the countries we will have a set of "VT Laws". What do y'all think?

The only problem with that is that everyone has a different opinion of what common sense is. You really need to go by a legal system. It would be impossible otherwise, you would be making up things as you go along. Each system has its own limitations and problems which you really need to have, there is no perfect system and we couldnt even try and make one.
From studying law in college I would advise you pick a system that someone knows well, even though most systems derive from English common law, work with one system.

I did this in Grade 5, for a "murder" of a pet....thing. It was called thingy. Our teacher was awesome enough to let us take the day off for a mock trial. It was a no contest.
....Anyways, I'd love to do it.

I'm sorry guys, for the first time in my life (well, close to the first), I don't know how to start something. I haven't taken the time out to do more research yet, or request a diary, but I still want this to happen, so now that it's summer, I PROMISE, I will try harder to get this set up.
