Yep you have to pay. It's something like $20, then $30 for expansion, then $40 for expansion 2, then $15 every month.

and you can buy game cards for 28 bucks.. they last for 60 days. BTW it takes like 5 hours for the patches to D/L So be prepared. If you don't want to be killed by people I'd recommend playing pve on the Runetotem server. The first thing you should do to start playing WoW is get the 10-day free trial, located here:

https://signup.worldofwarcraft.com/trial/index.html

This way, you don't have to wait for the whole game to download, which takes freakin FOREVER if you don't buy it in stores. You could buy it in store though and it would be better... lol. In any case, do the trial so you know you actually want to pay that much.

You don't have to buy the expansions at first... unless of course you want to play as either a Blood Elf or Dranei, but it will get expensive once you want to get everything, so just be prepared.

Just so you know, WoW can be hard to figure out if you aren't big on gaming. I really suggest you find the 'getting started' sections on the main page of WoW, they're a big help. Otherwise yuo may get frustrated.

Once you've got the trial going, it's pretty straightforward from there. Creating your character/choosing a server is pretty well documented in game, so you can get up and running quick.
