My friend Matt was absolutely in love last summer. The girl's name was stef. He totally fell for her. The only problem, she lives in New York (we're in Philly), and she had a boyfriend. He was obssesed with her. She used to come down to her cousin's (a mutual friend) house for a week at a time. Matt had nothing on his mind except her.
Eventaully Stef began telling matt that he can't fall for her like this, because they will never work together. Matt sort of ignored this and feel for her even deeper. After the summer they stopped seeing each other so much. He began to realize it was never going to happen. She has been a sensitive subject for him ever since.
About two months ago Matt was telling me how he liked a girl named Harley. She goes to our school, which is great, more time together. However she had a boyfriend. So Matt tried his best not to fall for her, knowing she already had a boyfriend, but he still really liked her. About one month ago Harley broke up with her boyfriend, to go out with another guy, they apparently had a thing for each other the whole time Matt liked her. I can see it in him that that incident kind of hurt him inside.
In the past few weeks Matt had been talking about liking a girl named Marykate. (I know this story is getting repetitive lol, but just keep reading) She was perfect in every way. She's cute, smart, funny, they were already good friends, she had no boyfriend, and went to our school. Matt went on with his secret crush for her.
A little while ago, (After harley, before marykate), people were asking girls to prom (which was last friday). Matt was nervous about asking Marykate so he asked a different girl instead, named Emily, who happens to be Marykate's best friend. He planned on going just as friends with Emily. As the weeks went on he fell for Marykate more and more and began regretting asking Emily instead of Marykate.
This past friday we all went to prom and had tons of fun. Afterward we went to Emily's house. Everything was great. We all drank a little bit (nobody was planning on getting wasted). Matt began to take the drinking a little bit further, he was getting kind of drunk. Emily and Marykate decided to go sleep upstairs in emily's room so they left everyone else in the basement. Almost everyone had a girl there, 3 pairs of us were hooking up at various times throughout the night.
Matt drank more and more as the night went on but nobody thought anything of it. By the time we were all lying down around 4am, and getting ready to put on a movie and then go to bed, Matt was noticeably different. He began to subtly cry and cover up his face. He was drunk at this point so he spoke his mind pretty easily. He kept talking about how he was sad that Marykate went upstairs and left him down there. He began crying more and more and i felt terrible for him, because i knew there was a lot of emotion behind it. At one point he texted Stef and told her that he loves her still. He was a complete mess all night until i got him calm enough to go to sleep arouond 6.
The next day (only like 2 hours later lol), Matt was completely sick. Me and another friend took care of him all day (drove around got him food and water and got him cleaned up) cuz he couldnt go home like that.
Now, this is all what i talked to him about last night (saturday) and tonight. In a paraphrase of his words: "I'm done. I'm tierd of gettingmy hopes up just to be let down. I don't even care about anything to do with girls anymore. I was more sad on friday than I have ever been. All I wanted was for Marykate to sleep next to me, to acknowlege me, to show that maybe she liked me at all."
Turns out, from talking to others today:
Marykate had no idea Matt ever liked her, she doesn't like him like him.
Emily and Marykate slept upstairs because Emily was getting emotional as
Matt got more drunk, she thought Matt liked her, but was figuring out he liked her best friend Marykate. So they went upstairs so emily could cry herself to sleep.
Stef never liked Matt a whole lot, he was just convienet to hook up with while she was around here with her cousin.
I have no idea what to do now. Matt is completely "depressed" (maybe not clinicly depressed, but you get what I mean). He texted me earlier saying, "will someone please just kill me". He ranted to me all day about how tierd of his getting his heart broken he is. Now we've changed subjects to normal topics. But I feel like he's sweeping these problems under the rug, and he still loves Stef and he is going insane that he can't have a happy relationship with anyone. He's usually not the kind of guy that would tell me anything super deep or emotional. I don't know if I should bring the whole topic back up or not? What should I say to him? How do I let him know he can tell me anything and have him believe it? etc etc
I watched one of my best friends cry himself to sleep and I have nooo idea how I can help him more than I have. Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you for reading!
