A female news anchor got a major surprise when her boyfriend turned up on air and asked her to marry him on live TV.

Anchorwoman Courtney Collins was bantering with co-hosts between segments during a 6pm newscast for KARK 4 News, in the southern US state of Arkansas, when boyfriend Pete Thompson walked onto set.

"Breaking news," said Thompson, turning to the co-hosts.

"You guys are doing a great job ... but I'm going to have to relieve you of your duties right now."

Collins was bemused and speechless as her co-hosts left their chairs and Thompson, also a reporter for KARK 4 News, took a seat at the anchors' desk and introduced himself to the cameras.

"I have a few things I need to say to her so you're welcome to join us here," he said.

A blushing Collins murmured "Oh my goodness" as her colleague launched into a heart-warming speech.

"Courtney, I just want to tell you how much I love you," Thompson said on air.

"You've taught me something: that love is about building each other up. And I tell ya, that's something I want to do for the rest of my life.

"I have a very important question to ask you."

A colleague handed Thompson a ring and he proposed on bended knee.

The very public proposal ended happily, with Collins saying yes and the couple sharing a quick hug and kiss before the cameras.

KARK 4 News posted a video of last Saturday's on-air proposal on its website, saying the event was a "complete surprise" for Collins but that the couple "are well known in the newsroom to be inseparable".

Parent network CNN is even selling commemorative t-shirts.

This comment on the video made me laugh.

This is a great example of how NOT to propose. This was done completely in poor taste. Not only does the guy confirm to thousands of people that he's arrogant, but he murders the proposal by talking about himself, making bad jokes, giving a play by play and the clincher: when he says "I think that's something I want to do for the rest of my life." You THINK, buddy? How 'bout you get off your high horse and think about it 'til you're sure. Oh, and way to make the girl say yes, ya' tool.

Some people need to be so negative sometimes.
