It should be a gif image.

If you can preview it in GIMP and it functions properly, you've gotten step one done.
Now, most forums, you shouldn't have an issue playing a gif file through an avi.
Now, since I'm too lazy to check, if this site supports off-site uploads try it through there by uploading it to tinypic or photobucket. If it plays in the preview there and you link it, then it SHOULD work just fine.

GIMP is fun though xD
I'm still trying to figure out how to get my flash plug-in to function on photoshop so I can make animated/toggling sigs.

Ok, so, the site DOES support off-site uploads. I obtained my animated avi through the direct link photobucket provides. I used this image:http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa244/relyh/Gif/avatar31580_28.gif
However, not all will work, as I tried two others and it came back as "Remote file is too large" One of which being:http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa244/relyh/Gif/5267penguinchiyo7vg.gif

So file sizes must be monitored, but other than that using and off-site upload you should have no problem. I'll leave my avi as is until you have resolved this problem. :)
