Turn the anger towards an inanimate object, and away from you. For instance: a pillow, a stuffed doll/animal, or even creating something (like music or art or a structure out of balsa wood that you can destroy and see how much it holds) can work.

Always keep your hands busy. Chop some carrots and celery then make a dish with Ranch Dressing for dip and serve it to your friends and family... or play video games.

If you want to avoid hurting yourself then you need to distract yourself when you get the urge. The ideas already given above (credit to Raenose & pcd lol) are really good, and there's some more here (http://www.recoveryourlife.com/index.php?categoryid=60), which might also be useful.

Is there anyone who you can talk to about this problem?

Do you know whay you do this? Figuring out where it comes from, what purpose it serves for you, might be a good first step. Then, you could figure out a substitute.

Perhaps you hit yourself as punishment, maybe your folks spanked you as a kid as a form of disclipline, and you're just doing what you learned. Maybe you just know that hotting=punishment, so you're giving yourself "what you deserve", even if you were never spanked. Punishment is a form of learning, it's administered to help someone learn. However, there are other ways of accomplishing this.

In either event, what you migth want to realize is that everyone makes mistakes, no one is really perfect, and that the goal after making a mistake is to try to learn from it, to figure out what went wrong to cause the problem, and fix it. If you substitute a more mental process of talking yourself thru those steps, you might not need to resort to hitting yourself, b/c the goal, the learning process, is happening anyway, and in a far more constructive way.
