Heh, I just fixed a friend's laptop that was doing this. There's possibly a virus that's on your computer, or (the more likely possibility) your computer has too many problems with it. Just download Spybot S&D, download all of it's updates, then do a scan of everything and remove it all (that will erase your start menu's recent applications, so you might want to leave Windows - for drivers - and Windows Explorer alone). After that, if some weren't removed, just keep clicking "Fix selected problems" until it removes all it can. Now, go Mode >> Advanced mode >> Yes. On the left bottom, go to tools. On the right, check all of the check boxes. Back on the left, click ActiveX and BHOs looking for anything that's marked red - if you find something, remove it with the "Remove" button. Now go to System Startup and anything marked in red, remove with the "Delete" button. While there, you might want to tweak your startup. Now go to System Internals and do a check. This will point out bad, corrupt, or misleading registies that might hurt the system. Some might be bogus, but you can figure out which ones are good and which aren't, right? :) Go to IE Tweaks tab and check Lock Host file... That will guard IE well. Now go to the Spybot-S&D tab at the top and click Immunize >> Immunize. The rest you can figure out later.
Delete your browser cache, then go and update it! That's one of the main keys. You have to update it or it might contain obsolete entries or be vunerable to some attacks (buffer overflow, etc).
That should do it. It only takes an hour to do and it works for me :)

My brand new computer doesnt have a virus on it trust me . . it is most deffinitley having to do with xp itself. it crashes on restart when it is about to boot up xp . . .i put in the (bootleg) xp install disk and booted from that but it had an error on it .. which is weird because when i installed xp the first time it didnt. this has to be the cause of it i guess

I told you what worked for me. My friend's laptop didn't have a virus on it. All it had was a little spyware, corrupt registries, and a need for updates.
If you don't want to listen to my advice, then figure it out yourself :)

Then try to go in to the BIOS and see if it crashes then. If not, change some settings because it's most definitely something wrong with your memory. Heh, if it does crash, then get a new computer

Well, I'm sure that Alex checked the system for compatibility issues before it was built, so it shouldn't have horrible latency or any hardware problems. If he tried to overclock it, then he could have set something wrong in the CMOS setup, and that might of damaged it's hardware, but other than that, it should work from what Alex has said.

Ya know... you could always PM someone to share that legal CD key of yours :D
Sharing is the best!

after you begin sharing, that legal key becomes an illegal key :P

how do you figure the drive has a scratch on it?
i can take a small grinder to the outside of mine and it wouldnt make a difference
as long as the platters and head is good it doesnt matter what shape the outside is

He probably means a corrupt sector in the disk. It might not be fixable through ScanDisk.
