First I heard that as long as the thread isn't 2 months old or older than it's OK to post in it, than I heard, 6 weeks is the deadline, then I heard 4 weeks, so when is the time to stop posting in threads? Say it's 4 weeks, is it if the thread itself is 4 weeks or older, or if the last post in the thread is 4 weeks or older?

Well I think, and this is just my opinion: 1.5 weeks + for P101 threads, 2 weeks + for Help & Advice threads, 2.5 weeks + for General Discussion threads, an unlimited amount for games/quiz/diary threads.

the general conception for most things for bumping is a 4-6 week period is the deadline to post. although there is a bit of a grey area, just use your own common sense. if you think that its beneficial for you to post, then post, if not then don't post. and if its past that 6 week mark, then don't post. there are exceptions such as for games and threads in diaries and stuff, but thats the main interpretation of the bumping rule.

Yes. If you think it's old, and your reply is unneeded posting is useless...

Yes the others have got it here. If you would care to look in the forum rules (I know that's a strange thing for some people) it does say there. It may differ in different forums but as Stephen said the general consensus is 4-6 weeks old. But come on, if a thread has died it did so for a reason.
Use your own logic as to whether you think you can add anything that hasn't been said yet to the op. :)

I have read the rules, but it was when I first joined, which was about two year ago.

4 weeks is the set in stone deadline for P101.
1-2 months is the fuzzy deadline for most other forums.
Up to a year+ is the deadline for Psych Ward, Art Room, and 4th Wall.
The second two deadlines mainly depend on whether the question is answered, when the user was last active, how old it is, and where it is.
Each old thread is a judgment from the mod closing it, and it can/will differ from mod to mod.

1.5 weeks??? No, then we would have many double threads.
Umm the rule varies from forum to forum. The Psych ward generally doesn't enforce the rule. P101 forums, officially it is about 6 weeks but that may go down to 4 weeks in the near future. Help and Advice, I think that as long as it's relevant, helpful, etc. then it can stay open, otherwise its about 6 weeks too...
GD is about 6+ weeks but it depends on the thread really. The 4th Wall and Art room are generally not enforced.
My general rule that I wish everyone would follow is:
Don't go past the 2nd page of forums. That way, you know its current and also it will be relevant. If it is past that page of forums just look at it, don't post in it :P

Actually I have seen many threads locked in that space of time due to people bumping them. And rightly so, by that time most people will have their answer.

I think 1.5 weeks is EXTREMELY short unless it was turning into a spam fest.

Hmm, well, we are supposed to only after 4 weeks and a bump.
I've never seen any threads locked for bumping under 3.5 weeks lol.
Like John says, unless it was everyone just saying "Yes" or it was going completely off topic, it shouldn't be locked early because of more posts.

That's funny... I could have sworn I saw one locked the other day by someone after like 2 weeks the other day.
http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showthread.php?t=37619&page=5 Was locked when it was under 4 weeks old.
I dunno. I think as long as the question's answered fully, there is no need for it to stay open.
But yep. This thread isn't for opinions, and you'd know better than me :P

Question was answered and User hadn't been on for like 1-2 months therefore Joe decided to close it.

Exactly: there should be exceptions like this, and most of the time, they overrule the 4 week thing.

the bottom line everyone is that 4-6 weeks is the general rule. but as with all rules, there are exceptions. if a moderator sees fit to close a thread, then there would be a reason behind it. so if everyone works on a 4-6 week range it would be awesome.

It would be mine wouldn't it.
Stop using me as an example. Can I point out that whenever I lock something it goes all wierd and I'm not sure if it's worked or not.
But meh, is it a huge issue?

i'm not using anyone as an example because there would be many to chose from including myself. if you think your mod tools aren't working, pm an admin to get thenm to check that your mod settings are right.

If youre having issues with your permissions how come you haven't told anyone about it?
I think you should bring it up in the mod forum because soon I would consider this thread to be on the verge of locking :P

He doesn't.. it's just his browser. I remember on Skype we were talking and there was a topic in the wrong place and he decided to move it but then didn't, then he tried again and did.

Yeah it seems to be alright now, I think its just when my internet decides to switch off, or I lose connection and goes a bit wierd.
If I have real problems I will bring et up. :)
