BILSBORROW , England, April 9 (UPI) -- Officials at England's Myerscough College said a lecturer faces firing after he used a cigarette lighter to set a student's Mohawk hairstyle on fire at a bar.
Authorities said Timothy Pickard, 38, set Jennifer Tattersall's hair ablaze while celebrating St. Patrick's Day with students and faculty at a college bar, The Sun reported Thursday.
The court heard student Jennifer Holt put out the fire on Tattersall's head. Holt confronted Pickard after the fire was extinguished and he responded by spitting his drink at her, prosecutors said.
Pickard was fined $440 by the court and ordered to pay $110 to each of the victims as well as $88 court costs.
Officials at the college said Pickard likely would be fired.
"This was a rash act which has cost him his career," said Pickard's lawyer, Michael Willey. "He has looked on the Internet and found out that these days 90 percent of hair lacquers are not flammable."
