In person is the way to go.
With a note and through a friend seems childish, honestly. If you are too afraid to asked in person or on the phone, you probably wouldn't end up talking much, which would mean the relationship would fail pretty much.
So in person is preferable, over the phone (call) is OK, over the phone (txt) is kinda OK, but through friends/notes, it won't work out probably; unless it's a really romantic note set up perfectly on Valentine's day, or something like that.

I used to get my friends to ask girls out for me as I was always shy, but now I have more confidence and ask in person, this is the best way to go in my opinion as I believe girls prefere a guy who can ask then face to face.

I saw a quote a little while ago, it sort of said "If you like each other enough already, the message is the important thing, not the way it travels." Personally I think anyway of doing it is fine. If you dont know each other very well, then phone call or person is good.

I think more creative ways are more romantic than just asking in person. Although in person is the best choice in this poll, in my opinion.
