A baby boy and his mother had a lucky escape today when the car they were travelling in slammed into a tram in Melbourne.

The pair, both passengers in the car, escaped relatively unscathed after the nasty collision on Bridge Rd, Richmond, about 1.20pm.

Tram passenger Renee Wilson, who took care of the baby until paramedics arrived, told ninemsn the baby "seemed to be fine, just a little shocked".

However, the 32-year-old female driver was taken to hospital with a possible fractured pelvis, an ambulance spokesman said.
