This will probably make me sound stupid, but what is vBulletin?

vBulletin is the forum software that VT uses. This site, or at least the forum part of it, was made by vBulletin, and the administrators of VT chose it as the type of forum they wanted to use.

There are all types of different forum softwares out there. Some are free and some cost a considerable amount of money. vB, phpBB are just some that cost. InvisionFree is obviously free :P

Yup, vBulletin is a type of forum software (often considered the best), that people like VT upload onto a server to create a message board.
Many are free, however vB is not, since it is much better than it's closest competitors. It costs $180 plus $40-$60 a year for updates etc.

phpBB is NOT paid, it is free.

Simple Machines is another free one, and quite likely the best free forum software that I have come across. vB still owns them all though. :P

Yeah, I'm glad someone pointed that out ;)

Just to sum it all up, vBulletin is what you're seeing right now. It makes it possible for us to post messages and have profiles and such.

InvasionFree and phpBB/vB are completely different things.

InvasionFree hosts forums that use the software (like phpBB, or vBulletin) but in this case IBP which would cost money to buy the software, however InvasionFree let people use their host with the software used for free. Obviously with some kind of contract with IPB.

Oh, and for the record: phpBB is free.
