View Full Version : What Makes a Good Teacher?

I don't expect this thread to last long, but I just want to see what others think.

I hear alot of people talk about how awesome a certain teacher is because he's funny, he doesn't assign alot fo homework, etc. But I'm just curious, do people who say that actually mean that their teacher is an awesome one, or their teacher is fun?

To me, an awesome teacher is one who is strict, corrects your mistakes, doesn't let you get away with things, and can easily connect to the student. There's a saying that I've heard numerous times, "You don't mix play with work". Do others think this is true?

I think a good teacher is one who actually cares about their job, and will help you out w/out making you feel dumb (I hate those teachers that immediately think just bc you dont get something straight away its bc your either stupid or not trying). Also a teacher that is funny and doesn't patronize.

Well my favourite (awesome) teavher isn't so strict as to be overbearing, but he's no pushover either. I probably like him because he IS fun to be around, while still being very serious and professional about his job. He's easy to talk to, and very good at teaching the subject I'm into (history). We even get together with this teacher and a group of students to play board games on fridays... which may be nerdy but we don't care! We have a lot of fun!

Good teachers make you care about the subject matter and instill in you a desire to learn.

I wrote a piece about my math teacher last year. I hate math- like really, I just detest it. It's never been a good subject of mine [except Geometry]. My teacher not only made class interesting but actually made me want to learn more about the subject. It was amazing. He's a phenomenal teacher and an amazing person and I plan to keep in touch with him after I graduate.

I think a good teacher should be able to connect one on one with each student.
Where as I've noticed some teachers are more connected to girls or guys, or color even.

They should enforce the rules, and not be soft one students they like.
Rules are rules, simply put.

They should enjoy there job, do it right, and know what they're doing.
If you hate teaching by god you shouldn't teach.
And you should always give it 100%
And yes, some teachers really are clueless on what they teach. xD

All and all a teacher who is strict versus a teacher who is fun.

The "Good" teachers seem to be the fun ones, but you sit there, and learn NOTHING! It's all fun and no actual education, so they may be a "good" teacher in th student's point of view, but in there actual job, they may as well quit.

Where as a strict teacher will enforce the rules upon you, demand you respect, and your attention. Where you might not have any fun, but you will learn. So a student might hate them, but more or less they're a "good" teacher.

Good teachers and professors can make a dull subject very interesting, make you want to learn more even if you don't have/need to for the course. Usually, are pretty funny, very smart, strict enough so the class isn't a zoo, creative ideas and effective at applying concepts to real-life situations and explaining them instead of reading you the textbook.

A 2nd year university class I'm in, adult development & aging, has a rather dull and boring book. However, the professor is very good, keeps my attention, makes me want to learn more despite the book and is great at applying concepts to real-life. The class isn't like high school where it can go all wild because the students there care and want to learn, and they pay to learn not pay to piss around.

1st year physics (did AP but i sat in for some classes because the prof. was said to be good), the professor had a large cart with tons of toys on it. Anything from using large, goofy arrows for vectors to various little gadgets and when asking him about radioactivity in his office, he used Barbie dolls for radioactivity (i.e. stable atom has Barbie dolls with an elastic around them, radioactive atoms has Barbie dolls with no elastic so when you throw them, they fly all over). Despite this, he was a brilliant professor, very nice, etc..., although he sometimes had a grudge against certain students (i.e. including me) for no reason.

Good teachers are kind and approachable but not friendly. They are always fair and collected no matter what happens in their lives. They enjoy their jobs. They know all of their class. They know exactly how their students work best. They respect their students individual abilities. Their students develop in both knowledge and personality during their classes.

Good teachers act like people before some kind of authority 'holier than thou' figure. I hate a lot of the teachers that walk like their job is the breaking point of the universe and that if I don't bust my balls all class I'll be a bum. The whole way the education system is run is complete BS, IMO, so some teacher forcing it isn't going to get me to learn anything.

I don't know how you can like strict teachers. Maybe it's just my district, but I learn better from the book than I do from the teachers, strict, fun, whatever. I'd rather not have some idiot ruining my day when I can learn better from words on a page. Fun, lazy teachers all the way.

A good teacher is able to connect and relate to the students. He/she has to be somehow strict but fair and also be able to not take it out on his/her students when she is in a bad mood. He/she has to explain all the material in a fun way so students remember all the things they need to know.

The strict teachers I like aren't giving you piles of pointless work sheets every class (had that far too many times) but rather, they're able to keep the class under control yet still be flexible. For most of my teachers, I also liked reading the book (some of their powerpoints consisted of her copying the diagrams and text word-for-word anyways), however, some books over-complicate an idea and a teacher may be able to make it easier to figure out.

I agree, the high school system is more or less shit. University is far different, although shitty professors, TAs, etc... do exist.

I think a good teacher is one that has a sense of humor, in touch with how the kids think, creative, allow a bit playing around like jokes etc. before class and 2 mins before out etc. but not letting it get absurd, and know what their talking about

A good teacher is someone who.. enjoys the subject there teaching and doesn't mind giving extra help to there students..nothing worse than a teacher who doesn't give a f***

A good teacher should consist of fairness towards students, doesn't get stressed easily, doesn't loose their temper easily, has a few practical lessons rather than getting students to write in books all the time, is prepared to accept the disadvantages, and has a sense of humor.

Someone who is fun, someone who doesn't let you do whatever the fuck you want, someone who cares (thats a big one), someone who EXPLAINS the assignments in full so youre not guessing, someone who doesn't treat you like a baby and lets you do hard things once in a while, someone who is aware of your life and that you are busy, someone who is understanding, and the list goes on.
