Have you seen this story http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/brazil-rocked-by-abortion-for-9yearold-rape-victim-1640165.html

Its about a girl of 9 who was raped by her step father and became pregnant with twins (I'm amazed thats even possible at that age). They think the step dad's also been having sex with an older sister who's handicapped. Anyway (this is in Brazil) the doctors advised that the girl's life was in danger because she's too small to have one baby let alone twins so she was given an abortion.

So now the good old Roman Catholic church, backed from the vatican by all accounts, have excommunicated the doctors involved and the girls mother because "life is always sacred". Never mind that both the unborn twins and the girl herself would have died if she hadn't been allowed the abortion.

Now I'm very strongly against abortion, its obscene the number of unborn babies that are killed every year here in the UK, but surely you have to have compassion and a bit of common sense in a case like this?

I don't care how pro-life someone is, abortion is the lesser of two evils in cases like this. You'd have to have a heart of ice to not see that.

One of my arguments in the Abortion thread in Rambling of the Wise was..."If a woman is raped and becomes pregnant from it, she has every right to abort it, if she never wanted it in the first place. What if a nine year-old girl is raped? Must she have the baby, even though she can't handle it on her own?"

One of many reasons I am pro-choice.

I may be pro-life, however I always state that rape is the only justifiable reason to have an abortion. I can fully support an abortion when rape is involved.

the only reasons an abortion should take place are:-
If they were raped because then it is the lesser of two evils
or if it is serious risk to the mother as the abortion will help preserve the life of the mother

I think that abortion should be looked at case by case to determine if it's justifiable. In this case the babies would have killed her and plus she was raped, so I think the abortion was needed in order to save the girl's life. There are always exceptions when it comes to right and wrong.

Okay, let's not turn this into a debate,
Otherwise I'm going to move it.

Poor girl though.
Some people (the step father) are just better off dead.

Debate ??? seems to be a lot of agreement here

People are posting their views on abortion more so,
And someone is bound to start a debate sooner or later,
So it's just a heads up.

I am pro-life, but I must admit, some situations in life are a hellish catch 22.

Edit: The church's response to the situation: to go against the girl and her mother, but not the abusive stepfather, is the reason that I cannot subscribe to organized religion.
Shit makes me sick!

How can anyone in their sane mind be PRO-CHOICE? Was there a choice for the life of the baby? A decision has already been made. There is no CHOICE and that is just plain BS. It has been documented that 1 month old babies can live though proper medical treatment. The life of the mother and the twin babies could have been saved.

LOS ANGELES — The world's youngest surviving baby, born at 21 weeks and six days and weighing just 10 ounces, is due to be discharged from hospital this week after a battle for life described as miraculous.

With feet the size of an adult's little fingernail, Amillia Taylor measured 9.5 inches — not much longer than a ballpoint pen — when she was born at a Florida hospital on October 24.

The odds were stacked against her. Doctors consider babies who weigh less than 14.1 ounces to have no chance of survival. And no infant born before 23 weeks has survived until now.

But defying the odds, Amillia was breathing on her own when she was born by caesarean section and even made several attempts to cry.

Now, after four months in an incubator at Baptist Children's Hospital in Miami, Amillia has almost tripled in length to 26 inches, weighs 4 1/2 pounds, and is expected to go home with her parents before the end of the week. Doctors say that despite initial respiratory and digestive problems and a mild brain hemorrhage, they foresee no long-term health problems.

"I'm still in amazement," said Sonja Taylor, 37, Amillia's mother, who would still be waiting to give birth had the pregnancy gone to full term.

"It was hard to imagine she would get this far. But now she is beginning to look like a real baby. Even though she's only 4 1/2 pounds, she looks plump to me."

The point here is the medical practitioner has a swolen oath to protect life. There are other alternatives than abortion which they did not persue. Those doctors should be excommunicated for performing the abortion.

Are you kidding me? You believe that the 9 year old child should have kept the babies? At that age it should be up to her parents to decide (the good ones). She was raped, her poor mind is probably already tormented enough, never mind with having to bring up children at that age. In my opinion the right decision was made. I understand the religious point of view about the sanctity of life, but sometimes there is too much religion...

if it happened once it doesnt mean it will happen again. plus how do you expect a 9 year old to raise a child. The operation would most likely end with the baby dieing anyway and would severely traumatisethe mother so the abortion atleast saved the torment for the girl. They saved the existing life instead of risking it its a simple decision

I'm going to have to agree with the people that disagree with this. The 9 year old did NOT choose to have sex, thus she didn't take the risk of getting pregnant. I can support an abortion in that situation, no matter the age.

However, if a person CHOOSES to have sex, they take the risk and abortion should not be allowed.

I'm pro-choice in a way...the choice of whether to have sex or not. If you want to be pro-choice, don't choose to have sex. I simply feel that when you make the decision to have sex, you also make the decision that you are ready to have kids, whether you want them or not, it is still a risk. Ignorance is NOT a justifiable reason to have an abortion.

What i think: It's sickening, that men like that live, and the girl had every right to have an abortion. If it was forced, it's not your fault, and no one can blame you for it. If you did it while drunk or it was your choice, you should have to live with being pregnant (Well, if your not going to die from it anyways.) And, i'm sure glad im christian and not catholic.. It's sickening how they think what the girl did was wrong.
