are there many health risks that go along with piercing your own nipple if you're a guy.

Yes! Infection is what I'd guess is most common.
It's very dangerous to pierce your own body anywhere regardless of age, gender, or race!
You should always get it professionally done.

A lot of people do pierce themselves, but it's never a good idea. Especially if you're going to go with the ole' safety pin and ice routine (don't lie, you were considering that, right? xP). It's virtually impossible to get those things completely sterile, which increases the risk for infection. Without using proper equipment, and without a good knowledge of where the ideal location would be (to avoid excess bleeding/pain/whatnot), you can also end up causing more trauma to the area than is strictly necessary. That wouldn't be fun, and can cause scarring. If you're going to pierce anything, get it done by a professional.
If you're still not sure, here's some food for thought: try explaining to the doctor why you have a small puncture wound to the nipple region when you go in for antibiotics to treat the raging infection...
