"Oh, thats so gay!"
Does this annoy anyone else! I swear I hear it come out of my classmates mouths every two seconds and it frustrates me.
I had a teacher who hated the phrase too and made a whole class say "thats so straight" to put across how offensive it is.

I do agree...I don't use the term myself, but I'm not offended by it...
I'm not homosexual.

haha nice teacher
i find it really annoying.
If you say it to my face, i'll either tell you off, or say "that *whatever* isn't homosexual, it's jello"(er... yeah i know that's weird but :D)
Frankly, people are stupid. sooner or later it wont be accepteable to call something gay, but until that day... time to ignore the morons

Yup it annoys me as well. Our school has started running commercials against it that are actually pretty good.

It doesnt annoy me at all, it's just what people say!

Yes, Ash, it IS just something people say, and usually it isn't intended as a direct insult to homosexuals. However, that doesn't make it ok. What if who you were was used as an insult? And EVERYONE used it? All over the English-speaking world, more or less? I've seen some good commercials with celebs raising awareness about this, and I'd like to share them. I won't embed because there's like, three of em and I don't want my post to take up that much space.

lol "That's so straight" i find that quite a insult XD.
It's true, "that's so gay" is not right, but it is one of the most used phrases to describe something stupid.
=\ i wont deny i use it, but i think "that's so straight" is more insulting XD
i have never used to offend the gay/lesbian/bi (s).. as my best friends are lesbians.
It's just a common phrase.

Yeah...people make up so many different insults it's a wounder the world hasn't gone crazy with people being angry at eachother. Then again, the world is just one giant war dotted with peace between countries every now and then. I don't use it as much anymore, sometimes I say it without knowing it. But have not used it in awhile now, being a freshman at the bottom of the highschool foodchain really has an affect on some people. In 8th grade...I dominated! Now I moved so I had no friends to start out with and really left me defensless against others who get pissed off easily...and I just don't use it that much, if not at all anymore. Wish people would stop using it...it's like calling someone a dog. Actually, being a dog is an improvement if you ask me. No fighting over sensless things! Only over territory.

It doesn't bother me because people don't mean it in an offensive way. You need to read into the context of things.
Films are made everyday that are racist, sexist, xenophobic etc etc etc. For example Tropic Thunder has a white guy playing a black guy. Is it offensive? Yet he is up for an Oscar for the role. It is all in the context.

In my experience people have used it as offensive though, for example around me they always emphasise gay, we have some closed minded people at my school.

What people don't realize is that the fact that it isn't used as an insult against gays directly doesn't make it better. In fact, that makes it all the worse, to me. To think like that is like subconsciously accepting that gays being inferior and synonymous with stupid is just the way things naturally are. It's kind of an abstract idea of mine and hard to form into words, but maybe you'll understand what I'm getting at.

I use it all the time, and so goes just about everyone I know!
It's not said to offend anyone.

I will bet my last pound that a fair number of you are familiar with the word "naff". If you aren't, it was coined by gays in th '50s to describe something "distasteful" or "heterosexual". We don't immediately jump on this as being offensive to all straight people.
People who take the phrase "that's so gay" out of context and interpret it as offensive are being short-sighted and just looking to be offended.

I'll admit, I use that phrase. I've heard it so much. I don't mean to offend anyone. It's just something I say.

I think that those adverts are the biggest waste of money I've seen.
Who is actually going to change their ways because Hilary Duff (of all people) is in an advert like this?? If it was Bruce Willis, John Travolta, Angelina Jolie or someone like that then more people would listen.
And what's with the phrases they're using instead? "That's so girl wearing a skirt as a top", "That's so 16 year old teenage boy with a cheesey mustache"...I mean, come on!

One of my very cool teachers takes the saying literally to help us realize just how dumb the saying really is. Earlier this school year when we got new assigned seats and a girl said "this is gay" he was like "wow, I didn't know getting new seats changed your sexuality. You teens change your sexuality very often, I mean, if you like guys thats cool and it you like girls thats your decision".
