Well, I got it off MSDN. But, you gotta pay for that service.
However, you can find anything if you look hard enough. ;)

I'm 18. I got it from a friend, who had a teacher which gave the class the username and password.
He told them it expired in like May of last year. And, it's still working. So....

The only reason the desktop looks clean right now is because I just reinstalled XP. But, I'm trying to keep it cleaner, so it doesn't bog down and start corrupting itself like it always does after a while.

Yeah, that's what it does, basically. Works great, then after a period of time, slows down, and corrupts itself. Like, my laptop for example, any time it would go into Standby or Hibernate, and you bring it back out, the Wireless adapter would be gone from the connections list in XP. You'd either have to reboot, or reinstall the driver for it to work again. Got really annoying.
Here's my Desktop computer:

Looks basically the same as my laptop. Decided to go with the same scheme for both this time.

lol for some reason i find it funny that your laptop is more powerful than your desktop :)
I've been told that before.
Why do you find it funny? I got my Desktop for free, and I bought my laptop. If I had the money, I can assure you I'd have a better Desktop.
Besides, I'm using my Laptop more recently then my Desktop.
My Desktop runs faster then my laptop does sometimes. But, that's because of the HDD speed, and the RAM. My laptop's drive is 4200RPM, while my Desktop's is 7200RPM. I'd also like to upgrade the RAM in my Laptop to 1.0GB, and again, if I had the money, I would do it.
But, overall, my Laptop is much faster. The only things it's slower on, is Loading things which require a lot of reading from the HDD. Otherwise, my desktop is slower.

Yeah, well I've always wanted a laptop. And, I did finally get one, but it was a Piece of crap. So, I saved up my money from work for a while and finally was able to buy it.
Although, the stupid thing is acting up. The lcd keeps like flashing a little quite a lot. I mean, it's like it has a really low refresh rate, even lower then what it's supposed to have, either that or it's going bad. A Few times, when moving it the screen has flickered. So, I probably should get it fixed while it's still under warranty.

no, we went over this in MITA the other day, it says it goes up that high, but really it was set at your TV's resolution. I hope you dont do graphics or anything, because using your TV severly degrades your graphics. What we see of your desktop and what you see are two different things.
also, you might want to find your TV's highest resolution, and change your video card to that resolution. if your going at a higher res, your video card is trying to paint a better picture than what your TV can take. Kind of like trying to watch an HDTV channel on a regular non-HD TV

Hmm.. Whatever are you talking about? :)
You can do a lot of those effects in XP anyway. Like, the Transparencies on everything but the First Screenshot, I used "TransApp 1.1" to make them transparent.
That sidebar in the Second Screenshot is a downloadable one. http://www.desktopsidebar.com/
IE 7, yeah, well it's messing up. It's like taking forever to load things now, and it's like freaking out on me. And, the ATI drivers for Vista Beta 2, I guess it is, are crap. They released some for Beta 1, but they like corrupted everything on 5112, and don't even work in 5219. So, I'm using XP ATI drivers. Not everything works correctly with them, but I managed to enable the DWM (Desktop Window Management, I think it is) which controls all the fancy things anyway.
And, XP is still a lot more stable then this. That's to be expected though. For now.
I just had Windows crash on me anyway. The Video drivers messed up, and I restarted, and it wouldn't load Explorer.exe. Luckily, after I rebooted again, it worked.
Still. 5219 is a lot better then Beta 1. And, besides, if you want Vista so much, it's not that hard to get a hold of it.
I also got a x86 compatible version of OSx. But, yeah. :) It doesn't work very well on my computers though. Stupid thing doesn't like Newer ATI cards. Anything recent. And, that's all I have, for the most part. I managed top find an old ATI PCI card from like 1996, and that works with it, but still. :)

October 4th, 2005, 10:56 AM
i got vista too
Sure you do. :) Okay, time for me to point out some inconsistancies. Yay.
First off. you do have the icons the right size. That's fine. Although, I dislike the Vista size of Icons. And, you do have the correct theme. But, then again, I have that same theme for XP too.
Although, first off, you have the wrong sidebar. That's just a downloadble one I put into an earlier post. The normal Vista Sidebar is more like the one in the first screenshot I posted, although, there are two variations, one that is curved, and one that is straight.
Second, Your Vista Style icons are wrong. Not the size, I don't believe, but the icons themselves. I'm sure you know your "My Computer" Icon is wrong, but other then that, your Recycle Bin icon isn't right, there is no "My Documents," and if there was, it's not on the desktop for some odd reason. The Recycle Bin icon is close, but not right. The trash piles up differently, and the Bin itself is facing the opposite way. Also, you have the wrong version of Internet Explorer. You have 6. Vista has 7. You can tell that just from the icon.
Third, the programs. DHmodtool is for ATI Mobility cards. And, you don't need that in Vista. Heck, it wont even work right with the drivers. You also have the Gimp. And, that is incompatible with Vista as of right now. It simply doesn't work. Also, you wouldn't be running games on it. Probably not the best idea. Especially seeing that just trying to play music on My AMD 64 Laptop with Vista the songs periodically stop because of different driver/other issues that haven't been worked out with it yet. The computer would probably die if you tried to play any intensive games on it.
Fourth. Your taskbar isn't Transparent. I know it doesn't have to be, because mine isn't on my laptop anymore for some reason. But, it is on my Desktop. By default, it is semitransparent.
Fifth, you're missing the little watermark at the bottom right that says the build number.
There might be other inconsistancies with it, but I'm too lazy to keep going. Anyway, you didn't give me a good screenshot of it anyway. Try taking a screenshot of the system properties, My Computer, and the Accessories Menu of your Start Menu. Then we can go off an a lot of differences. :)
EDIT: Forgot to mention that "My Computer is displayed as "Computer" in Vista now.
EDIT2: Those Image files on your desktop would also be in a thumb format. Not as just a Gimp Icon.
EDIT3: The font size isn't right. You can change it, but still. Not right.
Okay, I'm not going to look at it anymore, because I keep finding more issues with it. I know you weren't going for anyone believing it, since you left those folders on your desktop... But, it's still fun to point how wrong it is. You also said you would not change to vista when it came out anyway.

I am so smart! I am so smart! S-M-R-T! I mean, S-M-A-R-T!
Yeah, I know it's not vista. Just thought it'd be fun to point out the differences. :)
It'd be nice to get the visual effects in XP, though. I looked all around, and I haven't found a way to yet. I'm sure someone could hack it so you could use some of the Vista features in XP. But, I have no idea how.
Can't figure out how to change the icon size in Vista either. They like locked them at size 44 or whatever. You can't just change the size in the display properties like you can in XP. It doesn't change them. Changes Start menu icons/etc, but not the others.
Pfft.

definatley not vista. you can see where it says under system properties...the system properties box for vista will be nothing like the XP one, you can tell he edited the text in the box too, theres a little box with static pixels.
I'm one test away from being one of the 30,000 Microsoft certified people.
You may fool other people, but i can tell you right now, Vista is not going to resemble XP or any other windows OS. If you ask me, you should be shitlisted from this forum for having that much stupidity.
A site called wincustomise.com or somthing has all these programs to get all of these alternates for XP...Besides, Vista, is going to have a 3D desktop, not only are icons on the Y and X axis, now they are on the Z axis, and it expands to the sides.

Are you refering to my screenshots, or Navtiidia's? Because, I can assure you that mine are authentic. What do you disbelieve about them?
Since you said the System Properties, I believe you were talking about me. No, it's no edited. It's called saving images as JPEG files. They lose quality. That's why it looks strange anywhere there is text. And, as you can tell, I do have some of the windows on the Z Axis. But, that ONLY happens when you enable it, and press Windows Key + Space Bar at the same time, and it lets you alternate between windows. You can't work with them on that access. At least, not right now.
Like I said, If you're refering to me, just tell me anything and everything that is wrong with my screenshots. I'll disprove each and every one of them. If you don't believe Vista looks like the images I posted, you seriously need to do some research. That is what it looks like. The ONLY thing that IS NOT correct in the images is the sidebar in the SECOND image. The first image has the correct sidebar. The second has one I downloaded because I like it better.
You want a screenshot of any particular program or place in Vista? I'll post it for you. :) There are a lot of things that are easy to fake, but I'll give you that option of giving me any thing to post, and I'll do it. If you really do know so much about vista, you'll know one area that can't be faked very easily.

show us a document, and a shot of your start button. Send me a message on AIM or somthing sometime, I'll host it for you.
Also, half a gig of RAM isnt enough to run Vista.
I'll just save a few files to my server and show them to my MITA instructor tommorow, see what he thinks.
Also, they are completley rewriting the operating system, so I find it hard to beleive that it will resemble XP so much.
Also, I like how you have Beta 2, and microsoft only has Beta 1.

Whew! That took a while to crop and upload. Jeeze.
Also, half a gig of RAM isnt enough to run Vista.
I dunno. Seems fine with 512. It actually has 200 Megabytes of RAM free at the moment. So, It'd say it's fine right now. May not be when they actually finish it, but for now, it's fine.
I'll just save a few files to my server and show them to my MITA instructor tommorow, see what he thinks.
Okay. Have fun with that.
Also, they are completley rewriting the operating system, so I find it hard to beleive that it will resemble XP so much.
Well, It doesn't look like they did. Or, if they did, they did a good job at making it look pretty much the same. Right now, mainly what it is, is XP with added features. There's not a HUGE amount of difference right now.
Also, I like how you have Beta 2, and microsoft only has Beta 1.
Yeah, that caught my eye too. Build 5112 (Beta 1) Which I had before this build, said Beta 1 on it. And, so did the End User License Agreement. But, for some reason, this build says Beta 2 on the Desktop, and on the "Install Windows" Screen as shown above. Yet, the License Agreement, as you can see above as well, doesn't. It still says Beta 1. I think they started transitioning to beta 2, but haven't changed everything yet.
If you look around, every other screenshot (legitimate ones, anyway) Will say Beta 2 in the 5219 Build. Also like that in the Readme file above.
Sorry for anyone who has dialup. I converted the biggest files to JPEG, but the smaller ones, I saved as PNG files so they wouldn't lose the quality. Since I know Socks was iffy about that earlier when I saved them to JPEGs. Otherwise, some of these would be 2meg files.
As for it not working on 512 meg of ram. Like I said, it is, and after testing it on my Laptop and my Desktop, I can say this:
My Laptop:
AMD 64 3400+, 512meg DDR PC2700, 80GB HDD (8GB Paritioned for Vista), Radeon 9600 64 meg of RAM:
It works okay. Pretty good most of the time. Not as good as XP does, but okay. It works better now that I installed the XP ATI 5.9 drivers instead of the Default Vista Drivers. I had to edit the registry before it'd let me use the DWM features, though, without the LDDM Vista Drivers (DWM = Fancy Graphics)
Desktop:
PIV 1.8GHz, 768meg RDRAM, using a 10GB drive, Radeon AIW 9200 128meg RAM:
Works. But, not great. Sometimes, even typing in this message box, it can't keep up the pace with me. And, it's not the speediest, but again, it works. The DWM didn't work by default, because my Video card isn't DX9 compatible. But, again, registry hack fixed that. So, that works.
Just thought I'd give a brief summary of how it works on my computers. My desktop for sure, isn't the best. And, even with a 64meg video card on my laptop, it's fine.
EDIT: Changed the Images to Thumbnails so anyone with dial up doesn't lose their modem. Mine probably would have fried trying to load those. ;) Click the images to load the Original.

Haha. I don't care if you don't believe me. I just like proving people wrong. Especially when I'm right. (Which is always ;))
Did you show him the screenshots? Did you see that the Vista on his computer looks EXACTLY the same as this one?
I know it's not officially in Beta 2. I explained why it says Beta 2. You gotta learn to read. Apparently it's a transition thingy. Do your research. Here, just because I'm nice, and I don't like it when someone calls me a liar, and says I'm bullshitting them, I will find you some links which you can look at. :)
And how do you know your MITA Instructor knows what he's talking about? Just because he instructs that certification, doesn't mean he knows everything to do with Microsoft. Especially Beta and prerelease products.
Since I'm getting a little annoyed at your ignorance, I'll just give you a few links which have some screenshots. As you can see, mine are the same, except the background.
Click on some of the 5219 Links on this page:
http://board.iexbeta.com/index.php?showtopic=40698
Or, if you're lazy, here's just one link:
http://www.jcxp.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=2846
You can also look at the PDC 05 Screenshots. They are the same, except it says PDC Instead of Beta 1 or 2. All 5219 (Listed with Beta 2) is, is PDC with a different version listed on the desktop, and they removed the sidebar. But, It's not hard to get the sidebar back.
Would you like me to take my Camera and Take a picture of it running Vista? Jeeze, some people are just so ignorant. Just because you're uninformed, you automatically assume it's fake. Do some research, my friend, and you shall be come the wiser. Believe me, you may think you know everything, but you don't. I've been working with computers for a very long time, and I've tested LH 4074, Vista 5112, and 5219. I know what I'm talking about.
Oh, here's a link to MICROSOFT's site, where it shows Images from PDC 2005, if you know what that is. ;)
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/events/pdc/gallery.mspx
Here's another:
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/exec/Jim/09-13PDC2005.mspx
And I quote:
We're going to continue that today. We're going to be giving you an intermediate build between beta 1 and beta 2, build number 5219. It's a build that isn't beta 2 and it's got lots of issues in it. Nevertheless, it shows our progress that we're making, and we're very proud of the way we're building the software today.
Right there. That's why it says Beta 2 in some places, and not others. It's halfway between Beta 1 and 2. It's not 1 or 2. Like I said. The Final build deemed Beta 2 officially will be in November, supposedly, yes.
EDIT: Okay, know how you said that those screenshots weren't from my computer? Explain, then, how I have my second screenshot I posted is of this site (Virtualteen.org)? That's the main reason I said you could chose anything in Vista for me to take a screenshot of. Make it as hard as you like to fake. The harder the better, since all I have to do is hit Print Screen. Isn't this fun?
Keep the reasons why it isn't authenticate coming. I'll sit here and disprove all of them. See, that's what you can do when you are telling the truth.

Yes, I shall. But, Since I don't have a new one that's any different, I'll find my oldest screenshot I still have and post it.

What's your point? Have you read anything I've posted so far? If you had, it'd be blantantly obvious that I have it. Like I said. I could take a Picture with my Camera, any program, and situation, etc.
Also as I said, If you've read everything I've said, and looked at those MS links, you'd see that Vista 5219 "Beta 2" exists.
What makes you so skeptical that I have it? I have MSDN. It's listed right on there.

I'd like to hear your comments. Just, next time, try to be more extensive on your posts. One sentence that addresses nothing that I showed you above basically stating "I don't want to read your obvious reasons you have it, I'll just assume you're lying and say you faked it."
Nice Argument.

Oh, come on. We don't need anyone telling anyone else to shut up. He's just stating what he thinks. The point I was trying to make was that you need to do some research for the facts before you make conclusions. Not calling you an idiot, or stupid or anything. I don't like the fact that you called me a liar, but I don't really care. It's not worth making a big thing out of. The reason I kept going on about you being wrong, is because the fact is, I'm not "bullshitting" anyone. I can't be held accountable that you disbelieve me. That's your problem, not mine. I really couldn't care less if you believe me or not. I was just trying to point you in the right direction.
I know Vista is supposed to be a lot fancier then XP. And, there's still time for many things to be changed. But, the fact is, right now, it's basically XP with added things, such as a few new applications, and a updated graphics interface. If you look around, and look at a timeline of the screenshots from the first build of Longhorn, to the most recent version of Vista, you will see how much like XP it started off. From what I understand, Longhorn Build 3000 something started off based completely off XP. The screenshots even said Windows XP Professional, except the Build number wasn't 2600, it was 3000 something. Even as it went through the 4000 line of builds, it was a lot like XP. But, by the time it made it to the 5000's, it's still a lot like XP, but it's different in a lot of ways. If you think about it, they will probably end up on a 6-7000 build number or so before they come to a final. Plenty of time to update it.
Just because someone has been here less time then you doesn't mean they know any less about the subject then you. :)
I just don't understand, that if you have a teacher who has Vista, and you've seen the OS, you cannot believe those screenshots I posted are valid. They look like Vista, don't they? If they don't, how don't they?
If you have done any research on the subject, you would know that Vista is in build 5219, at least publically known that it's at that build, although it could be and most likely is in a higher build. Thus, you should have seen screenshots and various lists of features currently in the latest builds.

on desktop linux, use whatever screenshot program you have.

You need to fancy up your Ubuntu. :) And, run it natively instead of in VMWare.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/blahages/DesktopUbuntuDec172005.jpg
I don't have that copy installed anymore, as I needed to use the drive for something else today. But, I intend to install it again, and customize it like that on my laptop.
My server's running Ubuntu with and Counter-Strike: Source Dedicated server, and hosts my website.
I have it set up so I can remotely administer everythig on it, including remote control, shares, etc. It also hosts a lot of my music and downloads.
I just wish ATI could get their drivers right for linux. If it wasn't for ATI's crappy drivers, I could run CSS prefectly on it. Right now, it's really choppy.

The linux Screenshot:
That's Ubuntu running Gnome 2.12, which I customized a bit. It's using a vista-like theme that I found on http://www.gnome-look.org.
Basically the same thing ./Skhorpion is using in his screenshot above. Except, I rigged mine to look fancy :)
I have been using KDE 3.5 for a while, but I'm mainly using Gnome now, because it seems to make things look more polished, and it seems to use a lot less system resources.
Windows Screenshot:
Nope. Not using any 3rd party software. Just a visual theme for XP.
http://vistaxp-v2-vs.en.softonic.com/ie/45452
I believe that's it. It looks like it. The original site I got it from doesn't have it anymore for some reason.
Basically, downoad this http://www.llbbl.com/data/nw_uxpatcher.zip and extract and run it. It'll patch your Uxtheme.dll (Which allows you to use nonMicrosoft-made themes) and extract that theme you downloaded to the "C:\Windows\Resources\Themes" directory. Somewhere within the directory you just extracted it to, there's a file called "VistaXP" that says "Windows Virtual Theme File" below it. Once you've restarted your computer after installing the Uxtheme patch, just open that VistaXP file, and it should bring up the themes window and allow you to apply it.

It doesn't resize any picture I upload, as long as it's in the allowed format and no larger than a megabyte. The only way it resizes images is if you check that box. Maybe FF auto-checked it without you knowing. Try uploading images with Avant :D

Hmm Avant... Tried that a few days ago. Still like Firefox over it. It's based on IE, so I'll just ignore the fact that it's different, and assume it's crap for the very fact that it's based on IE. ;)
Eh, only William can make Linux look sexy :P
Thanks. :)
It's not that difficult. :) Just a Window theme, Icon theme, and a background I like.
I actually have my task bar looking like my Windows XP screenshot right now. Same start button, almost the same taskbar appearance. I just need to fix the font colors, and bend some of the colors, replace the MS logo with the KDE logo and it'll be great.
It's a start. The Normal KDE bar is too boring for me.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/blahages/SuseDesktop_Taskbar.jpg
I think KDE needs to work on it's Memory usage though. But, I'm sure they'll fix that in Version 4.

And no, you don't need write permissions to run UCC at all - and I don't know why you think you'd even need to set permissions in the first place.
And I've always had Avant Browser! :P Erm, William, give AB a chance - you should check out the options (Tools >> Avant Browser Options...) before you judge it :)

William, seriously, I hate it's splash screen, but it can be disabled in the Miscellaneous section of the options :) Oh, and you might want to right click the toolbars and get rid of the Search Bar and Similar Websites - take up space and blah...

Finally Changed My Desktops:
Here's how my Desktop looked about half an hour ago:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/blahages/POSSmall.jpg
Somehow Windows managed to corrupt some setting, so basically every icon in explorer wouldn't display, and it completely blacked out the control panel, search, etc portion of my Start Menu. Managed to fix it though. :)
Desktop: Windows XP Professional SP2 (Wallpaper from my Favorite show, Stargate SG-1)
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/blahages/DesktopFeb142006Smaller.jpg
Laptop: Suse OSS 10.0 (Applied the same basic Taskbar theme I have on XP to this, and found a Nice Window theme to go along with it. Rigged the Taskbar like my Desktop, but Changed the Logo to KDE)
