If there are old threads, that are too old to be answered, or threads asked by a banned user, don't you think they should be deleted? What's the point of keeping them, they're a waste of space.

We keep them there because it can still answer questions for future users. However we expect that members won't post in them, as per the rules.

Okay, that does make sense. Thank you.

They can still answer people's questions, plus that would just take a lot of time to go through and such.
People can find many answers in old threads just by reading them. That doesn't mean they have to post in them.

I didn't mean for VT staff to go through all the time to delete them, just when they've got nothing to do.

No i don't think they should be deleted... because sometimes you can get some suggestions from old threats too....

Yeah, everyone pretty much answered your question.
However, perhaps all the old threads can be put into a thread category named "Old threads," or something. And people can go in there before posting a similar or same thread that was created before...

Wait, in most of the forums, there are dozens of pages of questions, most people aren't going to go searching through all those pages for an answer, most people would just ask it.

The fact is we're not going to delete old threads, there's no good reason to. And there is the search feature.

And trust me. people read them.
Most people are just not members when they read them

Yep. When I was a guest here, I used the 'Search' button and found threads that were years old.
It was an odd topic, so only 1 or 2 existed. I was 12, so I couldn't ask the question myself- if they had been deleted, I would have never found my answer!

Okay, it may sound stupid, but I totally forgot there was a search feature, I've never needed to use it.

I'm not trying to make a whole argument here or anything, there's just one point I'd like to add, some threads, don't get any answers, like some of mine haven't, there's two of mine, one asked on November 9th 2008 the other on November 10th 2008, what's the point of keeping threads like that? there no answers for it, so nobody would get any help from it.

Because its a waste of time trying to worry about them.

Well I guess it would be boring just looking for questions like that to delete them.

There are much bigger issues on the site than old threads just sitting there. If we get to a point where we don't have room - if that's even possible - then I might agree with you. For now, it's a waste of time like Ant said.

Could we put a short copy of the rules, like 10 bullet points, when you sign up? Then more people would know not to bump threads.

What makes you think that registering visitors would actually take the time to read them? When I register on a new site, I never read the terms, conditions, and the rules, because I assume that I've heard them all before. I'm not the only person who does this.

Ok, maybe not. Is there a way to autolock anything over a month old? Or a way to put a message up when you click on an old thread that says 'DO NOT BUMP OLD THREADS'?
