Member of the week..

I was just thinking, what if we had a featured member of the week. It might help people get recognized for all the hard work they've done, and it might encourage people to do more to help out the site if they where competing to be it, make it more enjoyable for other people if they did more good things.

Helping people is not a competition. Thus, why should we turn it into one? Pretty much everyone who comes to this site gets their questions answered to some degree, we don't need more things that may make people feel bad and create rivalries.

Well there could be 2 seperate ones or the staff votes won't count but they could be tallied and posted as a list.

It might work if they recognize and explain them like XBL does and you get to learn something new aout them and for this website it could be chosen random instead of only helpful people or requested so people dont feel left out.

Yeah. It will just create even more social dominance, which we obviously don't need with the current drama.
Also like John pointed out, it would most likely be staff every week unless we made it forbidden for staff to run for it.

Yes, there's entirely too much social dominance here as it is, and often without any relevance to actual helping ability.

We have an annual anonymous survey, the 'VT Awards', which is as close to a democratic acknowledgement of contributions to the site, maybe those results should just stay up thru the year.

No, this would create jelousy and I think only staff members would be the majority of the winners.

I was thinking of something like this too. On one forum I visited, they had a 'Member of the Month' thread which would appear on the first day of the month. There would be 20-25 categories, ranging from artists to gamers to complete randomness. Then there would be the final category, Member of the Month. And there were no rows over it, and everyone was happy about it. I think it would be a great idea, and I don't see how anyone should be upset about not winning Member of the Month.

EDIT: By the way, staff members are not always selected. Rather, supporters and helpful people are selected for Member of the Month categories. So far, there haven't been any problems.

When you PMed me, I forgot to add, there are VT Awards [annually I think?] and people are selected for the best in different categories.
