I'm quite afraid of the dark.
I watched a show on TV about an alien invasion in America - they said it was real, but at the end we found out it wasn't - and it really freaked me out.
Anyone else afraid of the dark/aliens or anyone got tips on gettin' over it?

It's one of those things, like being scared of heights.
Just think about all of the times you've been in the dark and nothing's happened.

I'm kinda scared of the dark, but really only when I'm alone.
I don't like a dark house with me being alone, I get nervous.
You wont catch me dead walking around outside at night.

Fear of darkness is pretty common, it's the unknown and the sense of vulnerability that's unsettling.

Leave a light on, maybe one of those little plug in nite lights, and with time, the fear passes/

I never thought about aliens, they don't scare me. It's ghosts and demons that scare me. D8

What I do when I go through a dark hallway at my house is turn the light thingy on my watch on and use that so I don't bump into walls and shit. I'm like a fuckin' secret agent. But if it helps, ehh... leave a light on.

{Epic Jessi-Post} Just remember that there is no proof of aliens. Even if you watch those documentaries on Discovery or the History channel, it doesn't mean they're true. Ever notice how they always end with a "But...."? It's because stories often can not be corroborated, and there is little to no physical proof (which is usually circumstantial as it is). It would be arrogant of us to assume that there can't be intelligent life anywhere else in the universe, but I assure you that you don't have to worry about abductions. No big-headed bald green men are going to show up in your yard or your house at night. I promise. :)

As for the dark, it's a common fear as everyone's said so far. I've been afraid of the dark my whole life. As a kid, I sometimes left all the lights on in my room in order to sleep. I'd always use a night-light, and sometimes I'd leave my door open and the kitchen light on down the hall. I could see the light, and it made me feel like someone else was awake down there so I wasn't alone. Usually the fear of the dark has to do with a fear of the unknown. I know that was definitely my problem. I couldn't see as well, and my mind would come up with all sorts of things which could be hiding in the shadows. A good technique, other than nightlights, is to try meditating before bed. Sit in a comfortable position, one you can sit in without having to move around to stay comfy. Try to keep your spine and neck straight, and feet flat on the ground. Just close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Count 10 breaths and then start over. Don't allow any other thoughts into your head, push them out. Just count. Once you're feeling more relaxed, a mantra might be helpful for you. Say it out loud, even if it's just a whisper. Hearing yourself say it makes it more powerful. Something simple is good, such as "I will not be afraid of the dark," or "the dark cannot hurt me." Say it over and over, and focus on it. Visualize yourself sleeping through the night and not being afraid. It may take a week or so to really feel better, but telling yourself you'll be ok can really help. It's worth a shot, always calms me down when I'm anxious. {/Epic Jessi-Post}

I have always adored the dark. When i was little at sleepovers, i was so confused as to why people expected to try and sleep with the light on. i can't sleep unless there is complete cave dark. Of course, I have a very twisted an macabre sence of humor and my favorite animal is a tarantula. I once went down to some old creepy haunted barn at midnight with a friend. The sky was the perfect cloudy shade of grey, the dead trees made a gorgeous skyline, and there was a full moon. I commented on how absolutely gorgeous it was, and my friend replied that he was actually scared out of his pants.

So it's just a personal preference. The dark feels safe to me, like some big all encompassing blanket. The dark may be very insecure for you because you can't see your environment. Try feeling around with your eyes closed. I think you would get more of the feeling that everything is still the same.

Im scared of the dark. I never used to be, but I just this feeling now that whenever my lights go off, Im not alone.
To get to sleep in the dark, I just huddle up in my covers, close my eyes and listen to music then soon enough Im asleep. So that works for me.

I'm not scared of the dark because when I was "little", around 10-13 years old, I'd go for walks at night for a bit then come back home (sneaked out my window). Aliens I don't find scary at all, rather a bit of something that needs research.

The best way to get rid of the fear is to face the fear. So, for the darkness one, go into rooms (by yourself) and gradually make them darker and stay in there for a set amount of time. Keep doing that, especially in various areas of your house where you rarely set foot in at night so it'd be a new, unfamiliar time to visit it. As for the aliens, they're not real as far as we know or watch more to get desensitized, or stop watching.

I'm scared of the dark especially if I'm alone. I can't stand being afraid either.

Eh, somewhat.
When I was 8 or so I saw this movie where a little girl got kidnapped, and I have been scared of being kidnapped ever since. (No kidding)
So kind of, although I've pretty much gotten over it.

I also leave on these little light thingies all night and day. :P

Beeing afraid of the dark is very common, it's normally the fear of the unknown and it can be caused by watching a scary movie or thinking of something you don't like then bein alone and in the dark.

There are solutions tho, setting the TV to sleep mode and turn the volume down, or listen to music. I was very afraid myself until my mum bought a night light, I used it for a year then one night tried to sleep without it and I havent used one or been afraid of the dark since.
