Username...?

Why is it a rule that you can only change your username every three months? I've got no problem with it, I was just wondering why we can't get it changed anytime we want.

Because then people would be changing their name constantly and it would be hard to keep up on who's who.

In my opinion once every three months is too less.

Three months is the limit for a several reasons. For one, name changes force other members of the community to relearn who a person is. For example, if I requested a name change every week, it would be difficult for members to recognize me (especially if I didn't have a unique avatar and signature). The next reason is that name changes must be done by administrators, who have to login to the control panel, find your account, and edit your username by hand. It's not that hard, but it's time consuming, and the administrators have enough site-upkeep tasks to be done as is. Thirdly, it's pointless. Unless there is a mistake in the username or it needs to be simplified, there's no reason to change it. It might just be an alias, but that's how everyone identifies one another. Changing it defeats the purpose of having it. That is why users cannot simply edit their username in their profile.

Anyway, it was decided a long while ago that members would be allowed to request a name change if desired but only occasionally, hence the three month waiting period.

The only reason that it's three months is because people would change their name too often. Some people do it and some don't.
