For the past few days my comp has just shut down for no reason. If I'm browsing the internet it will just go dead and then start back up. I asked my dad about it and he said that it's probably a disk space problem. I don't have any type of problems with my disk space at all.

My current disk space is 1.30 GB and it has NEVER gone below that. I've stopped uTorrent because I know that takes up some bandwidth and I'm not sure what else to do.

Does anyone have an explination for this?

This happened to my computer once before, and the problem was actually the power source. It's a box on the back of the computer which supplies power to the rest of the components, and it can stop working randomly some times. You may want to clean up your hard drive as well, get all the temporary files off, delete everything in the recycle bin, and defragment the hard disk. But, I would definitely say that you may want to see if you can get someone with computer knowledge to look at the power source. That's where I'd bet the problem is coming from.

I can see several possibilities.

BSoD, or blue screen of death. your computer would give a blue screen then immediately restart

Overheat issue. Motherboards have a built in temperature sensor. and when that goes above a certain temp, such as 60C it will automatically reboot/shutdown to prevent damage.

Powersupply. if the powersupply is faulty it may be giving the wrong voltage's and putting to much power into the motherboard causing it to shutdown to prevent damage. or it isn't giving the motherboard enough power and it decides to shutdown.

when do the restarts usually happen? do you open a certain program and it reboots? Or do you start putting more load on it?(decoding/encoding Video, Computer game etc)

get back to me on this, and we'll be one step closer to solving your problem:)

I cannot see it being a disk space issue. Your computer will warn you if it's too low. Although I do recommend having at least 2GB of free space for things to function optimally.

Just as Mr. Hawk said, it could be several things (including temperature and energy problems). It could also be issues with newly installed drivers (any updates that you recently installed). And then it could be a malicious program.

To dismiss the possibility of these problems being caused by some kind of malware, I recommend updating your antivirus and running a full-system scan. If you do not have an antivirus, then download one immediately (such as AVG).

My father is an expert of computers. He knows just about everything there is. It's not doing it right now, but I'll have to take a look into it. My dad did try to find out what the problem was, but he never said anything about it.

If you didn't want help in the first place, then why did you make this thread?

It was al before he got up and fixed it. Let's just get to the problem at hand here. I'm still having it.

Earlier today, I was playing Zoo Tycoon 2, and my computer just shut down. It hasn't done it all day, and the strange thing is, is that it always happens when I'm running ZY2. Could THIS be the problem?

Download and run this and tell us the temps and voltages. A screenshot would be nice.

Disk space won't cause random restarts. At most it will cause sluggishness due to not enough space for PF.

Does Zoo Tycoon 2, put your system under heavy load? as this would make the CPU work harder which would heat it up more. which may cause it to shutdown from the BIOS settings to prevent damage.

Yes do this, and if it at all possible show us the temps/voltages while your are playing Zoo Tycoon 2 as well.

If you're father fixed it, then I'm a little confused as to how you're still having the problem.

In the future, I would suggest not brushing off other people's advice and suggestions as wrong just because your father is "an expert of computers." That is kind of discouraging and personally makes me feel like ignoring the issue at hand.

However, if you are looking for help, it would be wise to consider what has already been said in this thread by everyone that has replied.

Mm weird, i would check the Temps of which the BIOS Is to shut down the pc when the CPU / GPU or w.e reaches that temp.

check that in the bios and under temps / warning

i think

another thing is, clean the pc out, get rid of all the dust around the fans and inbetween heatsinks.

monitor voltages and fan speeds and temps using speedfan or another program.

check to make sure that your'e cpu isnt under strain as soon as its bootd, if its 100% used all the time, itll shut down due to errors and strain.

check that it isnt a Blue screen of death because alot of pcs are auto restarts unles sthe option is changed when a BSOD appears. ZT2, mm never had a issue with it before but it could be a disk error or something, reinstall it and check your memory to makesure it isnt causing the prob.

I uninstalled it and then reinstalled and that did not help. I finally got frustrated and my dad checked again. Turns out that we had to remove a bunch of programs and re-register a bunch of things. He gave me a portable 500 GB hard drive. I just got it hooked up and the comp is running faster.

@ Ben: I'm not shoving people off. I thought the problem was fixed but it came back. My dad is a very smart man. I think he puts up with enough shit at his work place and then having to come home to a computer that's having problems. I'm not saying he's an expert, I never really did mean it like that.

My problem isn't with your father. Simply put, I don't like how you dismissed everyone's theories and help purely on the basis of:

Indeed, I still don't see a HWMonitor screenshot.

Sometimes my computer shuts down by itself if I have a lot of viruses, or needs to upgrade.

I do believe this could be a virus, as there are viruses that automatically restart your computer so if so I suggest you do a scan with your security program (if its like Norton, Mcafee or Norton.)

Trust me there are no viruses on this comp. I've ran a few scans over the weekend and there's nothing. It's working fine now.
