you're not emo. You're you. You are an individual, and not one person falls directly into a specific stereotype

It's not 10 Seconds to Mars by the way, it's 30 Seconds to Mars .
No offence, but most of the bands you listed are crap, if not all (well, apart from 30STM I guess).
And you're kind of sounding like a poser to me >__>
Don't put yourself in to a clique due to your music taste and style of clothes, it's not good.

dont create a sterotype for yourself. thats a bad way to look at yourself. plus your not emo just because you listen to certain bands and you wear certain clothes, your not emo, your you! dont let anyone tell you differently,

PATD is emo? Well, I guess they kind of are... But yeah, most of those bands are crap, aside from Paramore in my opinion. Hayley Williams has a nice voice... 30 Seconds to Mars is okay, but PATD and FOB aren't the greatest bands (hey, I listen to them every once in awhile, but they're not in my top 200 bands, and I don't even know 200 bands off the top of my head).

Stereotypes are so f-ed up... I still haven't figured out how someone can be emo. Emo refers to music that uses it lyrics to bring out emotions in its listeners (or to have an emotional feel, etc...), I don't understand how a person can be music... Even if you believe in reincarnation, its not like you can reincarnated as music, you can only be reincarnated as another type of organic life form. But yeah, how the word emo went from describing music to suicidal teens to teens who dress in black (or nowadays even any color) and listen to music that isn't even emo is beyond me...

Well f*cking said! :)
Why is it even a label? I don't understand, it's a music genre, not fashion.
The times where I've been described as emo are pretty endless :| people have no clue. In my year at school, me and my friends are known as 'the emo crew' :what: seriously, wtf.
Well yeah I admit I'm strange and maybe a lot different to others but it doesn't automatically put me in to one of THOSE catergories. And so what if I listen to music which is bound to make anyones ears bleeeeed (that's not necessarily emo but still) we can all do what we f*cking well please, right?
I hate all this BS full stop.

No, emo went from a music style to a completely different music style with its "counter"culture, its own dress, mannerisms, etc, just as grunge and punk did.
It's not all that rare.
The thing that angers me most is the warping of the term towards an undeserving and completely unrelated "music" style.
Emo now refers to shitty music teens listen to as well as the people listening to this style of shitty music and their fashion style. I agree that it would have been better to coin another word for shitty modern emo, because old emo (Sunny Day Real Estate comes to mind) is actually pretty awesome and has 0 to do with the emo of today.
I propose "fEMOral" because that's the artery I want to jerk out of my body and tear with dull scissors each time I hear more tasteless "emo" on the radio.
Old emo fans didn't dress in skinny jeans, all black or put make-up on their face. Emo originally was just a substyle of punk with more personally engaged lyrics. It had nothing to do with the crap we call "emo" now. Emos were punk through and through. I'm willing to bet a lot of old emo fans are completely dismayed over how what was theirs is now commercialised and marketed.
I would continue this diatribe but I gotta go put on my judogi.
EDIT : if you can't tell, I like old emo, and I'm angry a bunch of marketing jerkwads stole that term to apply it to something completely unrelated.
If you want to know what emo was before all this bastardisation, go youtube "Sunny Day Real Estate" or "Fugazi".

Emo is just like Punk.... punk can refer to music or the fashion.
also called the punk scene, or emo scene.
i say those bands aren't emo, because emo music (now) is mostly underground bands, if it's mainstream it isn't exactly emo.
bands like FOB and PATD are just crappy pop bands.
thought 30 seconds to mars is pretty good and so is Paramore.

You aren't emo. You're the person you are. Not everyone fits into a stereotype. Fall Out Boy is pretty good. I've heard a few of their songs, but they aren't one of my favorite bands.Others such as Paramore and Panic at the Disco just never clicked with me.
Artists that clicked with me are..well, for lack of a better word, past their prime. They're in their 50s, some pushing 60. But, I like them and I just wish that I was born in the 60s and was able to see their tours and be able to live the great moments.

Emo = emotional. It's just abbreviated. There is no such thing as emo clothes, hair, style, mood, personality, body build, or anything of the sort. I wear loose blue jeans, black shirts/hoodies, died my hair black, and listen to "emo" bands. I fit no stereotype. Niether do you.
Those really are pretty good bands. I don't really like 30 Seconds to Mars that much, although they have some good songs. I haven't listened to that much Panic! At the Diso that much but they are decent. Fall Out Boy is one of my favorites, and Paramore is really really good too.

I had friends tell me I listen to emo music when I was playing Evanescence, but whatever, are they even emo anyway? I dunno. I never pay attention to band's genre's that much to begin with. I just listen to what I like and like what I listen to. Any kind of label or group is just stupid imo. They can be used in describing someone maybe, but people are not just one way or thing. You are who you are and that's it.

oh and wtf is EMO anyway. i mean who cares if you are more emotional than others, just means you have more character and you see the world as a more caring and destructive place. its the shades of gray you see, not just black and white.

I agree, I hate stereotypes. Why do people feel the need to put everyone into groups all the time? Its just uncalled for, everyone is unique You can label one person but there will never be a group of people that like the exact same music, act the same or look the same. So how can you even stereotype people like that!!

Those bands are pretty bad and mainstream and you get labeled. Also, don't label yourself either. Saying you wear emo clothes and listen to emo music and trying to get attention by that is poserish.

Honestly, I don't know if anyone knows for sure they're emo or not.
I myself dislike emos and everything associated with it. The musicians are whiny (as seen in their painfully hard to listen to voices), the music all sounds the same. Seriously. FOB and P(!)ATD sound so similar. MCR is just annoying. Paramore isn't as bad, but still...
30STM is beast, though. Not exactly emo, but close.
AFI was good emo. Emo before it became corrupted. Goth people pretty much hate emos now because they're starting to steal the Goth style. Emo music, and usually people, complain about the world, then do nothing to try to change it. And emo people are in no position to call anyone posers, they are Goth 2.0: just less death talk and more complaints.
I know these are stereotypes, and I'm not trying to say every person who calls themself emo is like this.
To answer your question/concern, you CAN listen to the music and not be emo. However, that's usually considered poser. But, who cares. You can listen to music for the melody and not the message.

one thing. FOB and Panic! are absolutely terrible bands.
MCR was never emo!
and i disagree with stereotyping and labels. Let people be, and stop trying to group them together like lambs.

Everything, literally everything has a label these days.
What's the use in it? Don't hate something just because of it's label. You either like or dislike music regardless of it's label. Judge music by the way it sounds, not its clique.
There is no such thing as an emo genre of music.
People just decided to call it that so it can fit their trend.
Actually it's the other way round.
Emo is actually a style of music.
People just stereotype others who listen to that type of music, or something that sounds like it by calling them emo.
People who call themselves emo are usually posers or try-hards.

Emo aka emotive hardcore is definitely a genre of music, that was at it's peak in the 80s - 90s. There aren't any real emo band around today though.
