well, come february 7th i'll be leaving the united states to go live with my father in china. my dad teaches english at university over there. myself, and he aswell, are interested in me learning chinese. my question is, if i do become fluent in chinese; what career options can i be looking at? the only thing that comes to mind is either an english to chinese translator at tourist spots in china, or an interpreter MOS in the military. however, i do see many job openings in military as a chinese interpreter.

what do you guys think?

If you ever plan on going into business learning Chinese will be beneficial since a lot of international business is done in China.

China is basically set to become the next world super power, pretty much taking the place of America. I think its a very smart thing to learn Chinese and get accustomed to the Chinese culture.

Oh you are sooooo lucky. I'd love the opportunity to visit china and become fluent!

Anyways.. business, like anthony said, and I'd bet in government. Or simply an inturpiters.

with the experience of chinese culture, and a language that will be extremely desired in the next 20-50 years, your opportunities in many careers will expand. Not many western companies have anyone to translate both the language and the culture so you would definitively become a commodity as someone that deals with cultural transitions and translations.

Otherwise government, military, and even teaching opportunities will come knocking at your door. Count yourself fortunate to have that sort of opportunity.
