I think it's a bit more involved now, after 9/11, so it's good that you're thinking in advance about this.

I'd contact the schools your planning to apply to, as well as the US State Dept., which typically processes these things for more info.

With your most likely being a citizen of the EU getting a student visa should not be too bad. However, you should visit the website of the US Embassy in Madrid at http://madrid.usembassy.gov/ Also, the following webpage goes into detail on how to apply for a US Student Visa: http://madrid.usembassy.gov/cons/nonimmigvisaf.html

I would say the biggest concern the US Government would have with student visa applications include:

1) Your ability to get into a US university.
2) Your ability to support yourself once you go Stateside

You will have to take a two pronged approach simultaneously as you need to find a school in which you are interested as well as dealing with the visa issues. Many times schools will help out with visa issues, but you need to ensure that your academics will merit you getting an admission. You have to take tests like the TOEFL assuming that English is not the language in which you take your classes to ensure that you are competant in English. In short, you need to also consult with the university in question to figure out the academic end of the process.
