why do people, especially high school students, lie about having sex with someone else to their friends?

-to tarnish a reputation
-to hurt someone
-to make yourself "cool" for being "mature" enough to have sex
-to see if people believe you

Because everyone is doing it. Some people just don't want to be harrassed because they have yet to have sex. Jocks love to make fun of those who haven't had sex, so some people lie to protect themselves from being bullied.

With my school that never comes up. Well at least not with us freshmen. I personally haven't lied or been asked about whether I'm a virgin or not.

Bragging. They do it b/c they're insecure and competitive and they're looking to boost their popularity/image by saying they're doing something they think is very adult and that everyone else wants to be doing. See also: Envy.
