View Full Version : Measurements or Scales? Which one?

I don't weigh myself a lot, I think it's less accurate than measuring yourself.
As when you measure yourself, it's a better understanding to how big or slim you are.

I've never had that body fat % thing tested me, but I weigh around 120 lbs, sometimes less sometimes maybe a pound over.

I only ever measure my waist, I can't measure hips properly :S I dunno if measuring your chest does much for you.

So...my measurements...
Chest: 32 inches (I think)
Waist: 25 inches
Hips: I don't know how to measure them properly because people do it different ways so, can someone tell me how? lol.

Why do you want to know all your measurements? as long as you are healthy, you are fine.

And what was the actual quesiton her?

I'm a little obsessed with measurements, weird I know. But I often measure myself incase I've gotten "bigger" and if I have gotten bigger then I know that I should diet.

The actual question is what do you find more useful, measurements or scales.

Useful for what? Getting a measurement of body fat?

There are free online calculators which give you a rough estimate of your BMI(body mass index). These are more accurate than measuring or weighing as they combine the two. Here's one made for teenagers, the adult ones don't work properly on kids:
http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/dnpabmi/Calculator.aspx

Guide -
Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
Overweight = 25-29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

I usually just use a scale though, it seems more "real" to see a number in kilograms. Stupid I know :P

The hip-area is located just above the thighs and groin area, it's generally the widest part of your body if you're a female.

Wait/Hip ratio is a decent indicator for your health, it lets you know if you're at risk for any health problems.

http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/whr

In women, anything bigger than .80 means you're at a higher risk for health problems.
Basically, if you tend to have an apple shape (carrying more weight on your waist than your hips), you're more at a risk for coronary problems. But if you carry your weight more in your hips than your waist, that's healthier.

Don't take any of this too seriously though, it doesn't measure your true health. From what I can tell hun, you're a perfectly healthy and beautiful individual, so I wouldn't worry about your size :)

1. if your waist is THAT small, you're reeally thin. You don't need to diet

2. measurements are probably more acurate than weight. Not that anything is perfect. Even body fat.

Scales piss me off. I normally just look in a full length mirror and I can tell if I've gained more than a few lbs or lost however much...

I sometimes measure myself... I did just now and I know that I've gained about an inch everywhere.. but it is winter, so :P

Steph. I don't like you anymore :(
Results:
You have a waist to hip ratio of 0.90. The information you entered: Sex = Female, waist = [-]37[/-] inches and hip = [-]41[/-] inches.

Your shape puts you at increased risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Frequently referred to as apple shape, you tend to keep fat at your midsection and less on your hips. Your body converts this upper body fat to energy whenever your body runs short. This raises cholesterol and blood pressure.

I really didn't expect that ... I reckons I carry more fat in my breasticles anyways :P - They measure bigger than my hips.... So, what does that mean? :what:

That's not a bad thing ;) most women would kill for that.
And yeah boobs do weigh a lot because they have a high percentage of fatty tissue, and my auntie has hugeeee knockers and smaller everything else so therefore she weighs more than what she's expected to.

It's not an EXACT science.
If it makes you feel any better,
You had my vote for hottie of the year :P

And I love Steph again :)

The first time, I measured how they suggested (in line with navel and top of thighs). I tried it where I'd normally measure (natural waist / smallest part and where the top of jeans would come to / biggest part) and then I got this:
Results:
You have a waist to hip ratio of 0.76. The information you entered: Sex = Female, waist = [-]32[/-] inches and hip = [-]42[/-] inches.

Your shape puts you at reduced risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Frequently referred to as pear shape, you tend to keep fat off your midsection and more on your hips. Your body does not convert this lower body fat as readily as midsection fat, which keeps cholesterol down.

I think that's the best way to do it... I DO carry a lot of weight around my middle, but not enough to be considered an apple shape. And with my chest measuring roughly the same [a lil' bigger, still] as my hips, I'm an hour-glass shape.

Laura is happy again. :D

Chest : 38 in
Waist : 35 in
Hips : 40 in

I have a whole lot of other measurements as well. I needed a bunch of 'em as I was buying a new judogi.

btw

Results:
You have a waist to hip ratio of 0.88. The information you entered: Sex = Male, waist = 35 inches and hip = 40 inches.

Your shape puts you at reduced risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Frequently referred to as pear shape, you tend to keep fat off your midsection and more on your hips. Your body does not convert this lower body fat as readily as midsection fat, which keeps cholesterol down.

Woohoo

Im starting to sway towards measurements, because according to the scales I have lost about a stone since New year. But I cant see it at all, so at least with measurements you can see a difference.
(I only know my waist for now I will edit more in later.. )
Waist: 29in (Sorry, I just typed the wrong units :( Lets see if I can get the next 2 right :D and thanks for pointing it out Gywn)
Chest: 36in
Hips: 36in

11.4 inches :P
Is that even possible? If anyone was that miniscule they'd be dead.

Wow Leigh :D you're doing so well!
In my opinion, I don't even think you need to lose any more weight cos you sound good the way you are  And you look awesome in your profile pic :D you were really pretty before but I can definitely see the changes.

You might not be able to see the changes because they're so gradual. That's the healthiest way to lose weight.

I don't bother weighing myself or measuring myself very often. I tend to go more by how my clothes fit and how I feel. The only reason I ever measure myself is just for giggles, to see how proportionate I am. Turns out: very. xP My breastses are only an inch smaller than my hips (used to be an inch bigger before I gained weight haha), and my waist has always been pretty slim in comparison.

All in all though, if I want to see how healthy I am I go more by BMI.

I've never really measured myself. Other than for my band uniform.

I don't weigh myself often either. I know I'm healthy, and my weight is just a number. I get weighed at the doctor. That's about it. Or sometimes friends and I weigh ourselves when we are fooling around.

I do measure to see how tall I am. Seems I'm never going to stop growing!
