View Full Version : I've just been sleeping...too much.

For the past week or so it seems I can't get enough sleep. It's not even like I have been doing much. Usually just hanging around.
I got to bed usually around 11 or so, and I can hardly pull myself out of bed before 10.
I know that I am growing and whatnot, but I have never been one to sleep much past 8:30. It bothers me, and makes me feel as though I am sleeping my day away.
The day before Christmas Eve it was 11:00 before I got out of bed.
Any idea what is causing this? Or how I can make it stop?

Have you tried setting your alarm to get up earlier? Sometimes it's just easy to get lazy over the break. Oversleeping can potentially cause you to feel more tired later, but it doesn't seem to me like you're sleeping quite enough for that. Do you still feel tired during the day?
It's possible that you're starting to come down with a cold or something, and your body is telling you to sleep so that it can focus on fighting it off. If you're taking any medications (especially new ones, or ones that you recently have started taking a higher dose of), have a parent or a friend google the side-effects to see if drowsiness is one of them. If you do it yourself, you'll see all of the other side-effects, and the power of suggestion is a powerful thing. xP
Try setting your alarm for 9 or so. You still get to relax over the break, and get a little extra sleep (which you seem to need), but you won't have to feel like your day is half over already. See if that helps, as much as I know it sucks to have that alarm go off when you don't have to go anywhere. xP
If it doesn't get any better, especially if you find yourself napping regularly (more than a power nap) or feeling unusually tired during the day, maybe see your doctor, they may reccommend something that could help you out.

I set my alarm for 8 this morning, because I had a few things that I wanted to get done this morning.
I put it across my room (it was on my phone) and I got up to turn it off, hoping that it would be better than just setting it next to my bed. I got up, hit dismiss and got into bed and slept for another two hours.
I don't take any medications, and I don't think that I am coming down with a cold, I feel fine.

Hm. Well, as a teenager you probably need around 9 hours per night. But, seeing as this isn't normal behavior for you, maybe it's not just that. How's your mood lately? If you've been feeling stressed, or down, that can trigger the urge to sleep it off. I know it's always my first instinct when I'm a downer.
Otherwise, make sure you're getting enough carbs (whole grains and nuts are good), as well as protein, and of course drink plenty of water. Might help a bit.
Like I said though, if nothing really helps, ask your doctor. There's probably an easy fix somewhere, just not one we're finding. :)

do you go to school? Did you have a normal sleep schedule when you were going to school, or is it more like going to bed at 11 or 12 or later, then sometimes at 10 and 9?
Your body, when it comes to sleep, needs a schedule. That's how it works, and if you keep a good schedule, you'll usually wake up at the exact time that you usually do. Try staying up late and then waking up when you usually would if you were going to school. Then, that day, go to bed early when you get tired. That will knock your wakeup time to earlier eventually. Lastly, mark a time when you feel it's appropriate to go to bed and wake up, and stick to it. Eventually you should even out.
I'm the same way as you and this is what I'm going to start doing. Hopefully it works.

Right now I am on my Christmas vacation, but yes I do go to school.
I am usually in bed by 10 and asleep by 10:30 or so. If I am up past then, it's unusual. I wake up at 7 on school mornings. So that's about 8 1/2 hours. So why now that it is vacation do I feel as though I need so much more?
Thank you for your idea, I will try that. Maybe a little later than school time. 7 just comes to soon.

yeah that's a good idea. plus it will help with getting back to a school schedule soon.

Maybe because you're on vacation, you are lazier and don't have as much energy mentally as you would need when you go to school.

Autumn, first, belated birthday wishes!
Second, there's a reason why you're sleeping so much. Either you're coming sdown with a nasty of some sort, or you're just really tired. Sometimes, the body just conks out, and knowing how conscientious you are, I'd bet it waited utnilt you were on vacation.
I wouldn't recommend fighting this or otherwise try to change it, give yourself the rest you seem to need now. Wise man once said" "Always listen to your body".

Thank you for the birthday wishes. Merry belated Christmas to you. :)
I have been on vacation for....9, almost 10 days now. Sure I should have caught up on my sleep by now? But then again....I do often wake during the night to find some sort of furry cat playing with my head, or someone walking into the house, or my phone ringing, or someone walking up the stairs.
Why is it that I awake in the morning usually pretty reasonable time, say 8 or so, and lie awake for a few moments, but I just feel as though I really can't get out of bed. Like I want to sleep all day.
I just really hate getting up late. Dunno why. I'll be the good little girl in college I bet, going to bed before midnight, waking up early to study for that exam and doing laundry while all the party people are passed out after just getting home. And, I'm okay with that. :)

It might take 9 or 10 days or more to catch up, Autumn. Depending on how drained you were, it takes time to replenish yourself. Maybe you were more exhausted than you thought, maybe you were working harder than you realized.
I think the best advice is to listen to yourself, what your body is saying, and go along with it for awhile w/o judging yourself too harshly.

Well there's your problem! Disturbed sleep is just as bad or worse than no sleep.
Recomendation. If you can, remove the cat (that can be hard sometimes though),turn the phone off, close your door to block noises some, and perhaps play music on your mp3 or something.

I sleep irregularly as well and find it to be annoying, but I learn to develop some guidelines and form routines based on the time of year and what schedules I must follow.

You are not alone i do the same thing, lol. Try this set 2 or 3 alarms on your phone (i can set 3 on my dont know about yours) What usally happens is that i have to get up at say 8 or 9 i will set my alarms to start going off about an 30 minutes to an hour before i need to be up. setting them to go off at about 5, 10, or 15 minutes apart. So then when you get up to go to the other side of the room you will do it a few times.
Works for me.

I'm the worst oversleeper you'll probably ever meet. Trust me I know what it's like to sleep a day away.
I sleep anywhere from 12 to 15 hours per night. I go to sleep at ~3:30am and wake up usually at 4 or 5pm. When I go to sleep sooner (midnight) I'm still not up before 2pm.
I'm a night owl but I don't think that explains my hypersomnia. I've pretty much always been this way. Even when I wake up for school (6:45am), I have a lot of trouble going to sleep before at least midnight.
Anyway, to avoid oversleeping I found that the only thing that works is the alarm trick. When I have school, I go to sleep at midnight and then drag myself out of the bed at 6:45am.
The trick is that you must not allow yourself to go back to sleep. Place your alarm far away and when you go to turn it off, do that then go straight upstairs or downstairs or whatever. Don't even think about going back to sleep. You can also "fix up" your snooze button. I broke mine because I'd keep overusing it. In my sleepiness I usually hammer the clock and wonder why the heck it won't shut up, then I remember my fix. I'm very forgetful when just waking up so it somehow always work. Since I've spent energy pounding my alarm and it won't stfu anyway without further effort, I just wake up and go upstairs.
Failing that, this might be worth considering : http://www.alarmclocksonline.com/Clocky.htm
Chasing around your alarm clock will get you sufficiently busy to ease up the drowsy feeling you get when you wake up too early. If you feel less drowsy you won't want to go back to sleep as much.
Alternatively, you can just sleep as much as your body needs to. I love sleeping and I don't understand people who don't. I mean, it's the perfect excuse to do absolutely nothing and a bed is so comfy...

Ive been oversleeping as well recently.
Today I managed to get up at 10 with going to bed at like 2 but the 2 days before that I was going to bed at 12 and getting up at like 12/1PM
Just set your alarm and even get your Mum/Dad to pull the sheets off your bed so you have to get up.
